Dummies/Cot Death

My baby is nearly 2 months and I have been giving her a dummy because my friend said that 80% of cot deaths occur in babies who did not use dummies and also she is a very sucky baby and made my nipples bruised and bleeding from sucking. I've been given alot of stick from people about dummies so I've had a look on the internet to check about it. I have found some stuff about it. Benifits of dummies are: may affect the muscles and tone of the airway, stop infants sleeping too deeply so they wake up if they overheat or have trouble breathing and the outer part of the dummy can keep covers off babies faces. There was an article I was reading which says that if you regularly give your baby a dummy and forget to one night the risk of cot death is increased as they are not used to it and their tongue could go into the back of thier mouth. (sorry its a bit long winded) Some nights she won't take the dummy and spits it out. I now worry what might happen. Does the fact that she spits it out sometimes mean she can sleep with or without the dummy without danger or if not is there any way i can make the dummy seem more attractive???

I read an article which said that it was good for a baby to suck a dummy at night as it teaches them to breath through their nose. My little boy is now 1 and he has sucked a dummy at night for the past year. When he's tired he'll look for it whether at night or during nap times. Inevitably he spits it out at somestage through the night, sometimes he'll cry out for it - but not waken, and other times he won't. I would be more concerned about the other causes of cot death, like making sure you always put her on her back, making sure no-one smokes around her, watch your own alcohol intake and not bringing her into your bed to sleep. Good luck.

Hiya, i heard the same; that the risk COULD be increased. I think you have to remember that it is only a small possibility and as "immi1987" you don't want to spend too much time worrying about the what ifs and maybes. Just make sure you are sensible about the other things you can control; like tempetrature, your own alcohol intake and people smoking around bubs. I am sure all will be fine! Good luck X

hiya my little boy is 4 months old ans he is the same sometimes he will take his dummy other times he wont, i also heard that it can reduce cot death asthey have ot breath to suck on the dummy. i dont know if this will help or not but personally i believe if your baby is goingt o die of cot death nothing you can do will stop it, its just one of those things, as long as her blankets wont suffocate her or anything then she should be fine enjoy your little girl.

your right, dummies have been shown to reduce the chance of cot death but what you have to remember is that they dont actually know exactly what does cause cot death. please dont take this the wrong way but if you spend all of your time worrying about cot death then your never going to be able to enjoy your baby. if she wants her dummy then give it to her, if not then let her go without because it really wont make any difference im sure. the factors that really REALLY increase the chances of cot death are smoking around the baby and putting the baby to sleep on its front so as long as your not doing these things, your doing everything you can to prevent it so please dont worry. just enjoy your little one and feel sae in the knowledge that your doing everything you can to make her safe. if she doesnt want her dummy dont force her xxx
