This is such a good article. I joined the NCT and we organised our own first aid course and I have used to when matilda choked once. it was invaluable. If anyone wants to do a first aid course I think the NCT run them, or your local GP will probably be able to suggest where to go on one!
Basic first aid
It’s essential to have basic first-aid skills as a parent. The risk of potentially catastrophic complications, such as infection of wounds, can be minimized through prompt and effective first-aid. You should, however, be aware of when you should seek professional medical attention – see when to call the pediatrician for more information.
Hot tip To minimize the risk of infection, remember to wash your hands thoroughly before administering first-aid.

Hi, I have a little boy whose 21 months and I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second, When I got pregnant with my first I was really worried I didn't know enough about first aid for babies and children I was recommended by my elder sister to go on a course I found a company called Medirite who do a really fantastic one day course I really enjoyed and came away feeling so much more confident about administering first aid to a child and have subsquently used my knowledge I learnt when my son choked.
Just thought I'd share this gem with you all!
You can book the courses at:

Hi,
Why does the video not state...
"Check inside his mouth and remove any object if you can, being careful not to push the object further down his throat."
...as the article does?

We have two excellent videos on the site and they show you exactly what to do if your child chokes and how to administer infant CPR. They are both taught by Pat Burnham from St John's Ambulance. Here are the links to them: http://www.gurgle.com/videos-2664/First_Aid_If_your_baby_stops_breathing.aspx

We have had great feedback from both of them to say that they are very clear and helpful. Hope they help.

"If your child is not breathing, start mouth to mouth resuscitation immediately." - why doesn't the article explain how to do this?!
"Use two fingers to find the position – a fingers width below the nipple line in the middle of the chest and press your both fingers sharply down one third of the depth of your baby’s chest." - these instructions are very vague!
Why doesn't this article explain how to become PROPERLY first aid trained? E.g. St John Ambulance, see https://www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses/courses-for-the-general-public.aspx
