Familys views on the names we like

Me and my partner have decided on Poppy Sue for a girl and Rory James for a boy. When i told my family my cousin laughed his head off at the name Rory and thought we were joking and my nan said she wasnt keen on Poppy and kept coming up with all these other names but i kept saying i really like Poppy then she said i'll probably change my mind when i see her if i have a girl. Then theres my partners Dad he just doesnt like either of them but to be honest i dont think he'd like anything we'd say. I just thought it was really rude of them.

We could name a hundred girls, but we're having a boy! My husband's Welsh and we really like Dewi (pronounced Dow-ee, NOT Dew-ee) but as we live in East Sussex, we're not sure if it's a good choice. I'm thinking the poor little mite will end up spelling out his name and correcting pronounciation for his whole life! Also, my (English) side of the family think it's a bit weird. Other options are Theo (I love the idea of Teddy as a nickname!) and Evan. And of course, any name has to fit with 3yr old Jacob Asher.

well I am having trouble with a girls name. We have chosen Aidan Taylor for a boy and are just having so much trouble choosing a girls name cos we just can't agree. My mum is also giving me grief over name choices as I have suggested Imogen and she doesn't like it. I am just hoping this is a little boy now. Save all the hassle lol. Good luck with your little boy and Rory is a lovely choice. x

I love the name Rory, I think it is so strong and masculine, now I am pregnant again I am not telling anyone the names we like, I found that whenever i said a name whilst i was pregnant someone else pinched it, I liked Eden and told a friend who was pregnant and she used it for her girl and at work I told a colleague who asked me what names we were thinking (his wife was a few months further on than me) and we said Imogen, he said he had never heard that name and loved it and so their little girl was named Imogen, so not going to fall for that again. I know 4 people who are pregnant and due before me and i will be carefull not to give the name away again.
Also other people's opinion on the name are rarely useful as it is so personal, the reward for the pain of childbirth is being able to have the freedom to name this baby you are responsible for and when they are older there is only you to justify why you chose their name so as long as you feel you can do this with conviction then do not be swayed by others

I think that a lot of people associate names with other people and that colours thier opinion but once your child is born it frows into the name that you have chosen and people see it differently, I wasnt keen on the name Faye because I knew some unpleasant faye's but now my neice is called Faye i think it suits her so much and couldnt imagine she could be called anything else, now the image I have of Faye is a delicate little girl with blonde curls instead of the rough person i knew and imagined when I thought of the name. Similarly with my own daughter I thought my mother in law was cruel when we said we liked the name Heidi and she said our baby would probably be disabled if we called her that cos she knew a little girl with severe downs syndrome called Heidi, despite this and my mum disliking her middle name Imogen when we first suggested it we did call her Heidi Imogen and now both of them say they love it and how much it suits her. so dont worry what other people think, your baby will show them that it can change all their perceptions and be perfect.
I didnt really like the name Barney either when it was first chosen for my nephew but again it suits him and has really grown on us.

Congratulations, a wee boy! Rory is such a lovely name. Its on our short list along with Ewan. Its such a tough decision naming a child, isn't it! Good luck with your preganancy xx
Rory and Ewan are lovely names. I have a boy who we called Angus Finn and if we ever have another boy it will be Oscar henry or maybe Oscar Max. Boy are just great and they need boy names in which they can become men with. I have a harder time with girls names so pity help me if I have a girl. Hubby and I disagree more on girls names than boys. I always believe in the back door test... go to your back door and yell your name as loud as you can. If you are not embarrassed doing so its a keeper and tell your family to knock it off and be supportive. They should feel lucky and privileged to know the sex of the baby and that you were willing to tell them. Some people have to wait. Good luck and can't wait to see if you stick to you name guns!!!
