My son is 6m He started weaning about 4wks ago and he loves baby rice and tolerated carrot but any other flavour I introduce he gags and clamps his mouth shut after the first mouthful. I have tried butternut squash, apple, banana and a branded fruity baby breakfast. Any advice? Thanks

I've been weaning my 6m old for the past 2m and he prefers fruit to the veg! He liked carrot but other stuff like squash or sweet potato he found a bit strong but he can't get enough of them now! Another favourite is pear, if they are ripe enough you can puree them without cooking. Try mixing a spoonful of fruit or veg with some rice at first as it won't be so strong and it'll get him used to the flavour. I started doing this, then when he was used to it added more veg/fruit and less rice until it was just the puree. Have you tried mixing some rusk with milk for breakfast? They do ordinary ones and I think farleys do banana flavoured ones too. My son likes the red fruit flavoured oned from boots. Have you tried mixing your babies usual milk with the fruit or veg as this will have a bit of a flavour he is used too.

Hi I have been giving our son solids since he was 4 months- another early success was porridge made with oatmeal rather than oats (much smoother) and quinoa

Thanks for that, didn't think of mash potato as I don't eat it myself, I will give that a go.

hi ya, have you tried giving him mashed potato i no its quite bland but you could mix a little veg in with it to begin with till he gets used to it and then add more as u go along. it may be that he is still getting used to a different texture of food as well as new tastes. so i wouldnt always think it being bland is too much to worry about just yet. fruit can be quite sweet and sharp so it might just be that hes not quite ready for such a strong taste just yet and may prefer more savory things at the mo. my my son was great with his dinners but finding sweet things like puddings he liked was not as easy (he even hated the chocolate ones!!). i'd keep trying him with the fruit every now and then and see how his taste bud change. hope this helps :-)
