My son is 6wks old and since birth has not stopped feeding. I am breastfeeding and hv and midwife said he is latched on correctly. He only stops for about 10 - 15mins and falls asleep on the breast. It is beginning to get me down as we are unable to leave the house as all he does is scream for more food. Any advice or suggestions of what to do would be great.

I'm wondering how you are feeding him. Is it on both breasts or just one? Are you moving him to the 2nd breast before he is really done with the first? Or is he coming off himself too early? When the baby first gets onto a breast he gets lower fat milk. As he stays on that breast, he gets higher fat milk. If your son feeds too short a time on one or both breasts, he may not be getting the fat that takes longer to digest. He may go longer between feeds if he does get this fatty milk.

Often babies that want to eat for long stretches are not latching on correctly. I know you said that you have seen your hv and midwife but are they fully trained and updated about breastfeeding? I think you should ring one of the advice lines below because they can put you in contact with a local expert.

Hi there,

Well I have started to continue the feed on the same breast after 15mins so he does get the full fat milk. He then takes himself off sometimes.
I have been in touch with the La Leche League and they are sending me details of the meetings in my area.
He has been more settled recently but suffers with wind alot and has started to bring up milk sometimes - usually in the morning and then in the afternoon and is very crabby and fidgety. We are trying out some suggestions from LLL to try and relieve this.
To be honest I haven't felt particularly favourable towards the help the midwife nor the HV have given me so far as they told me to give him a dummy or bottles of formula:)
It doesn't hurt as it did at the beginning but he does sometimes take himself off and then want to go back on.
I will persevere.
Thanks

Thanks for the advice, I have written to them. He has had a much better day today with 1 & half hrs sleep this morning, 1hr after lunch, 3this afternoon and asleep at 10pm. Yippee!!!
Thats good news if you get good sleep makes all the difference. My baby seems to drop off to sleep quite quickly as well so I usually change her nappy when she does it just to wake her up again then carry on feeding making sure she gets the hind milk as well.Long may it continue. Steph
