Are you desperate to know when your due date might be? The average pregnancy lasts for 280 days or 40 weeks from the first day of your last period. This means that midwives can work out roughly when your due date will be. Unfortunately most babies don’t arrive on their due dates (babies are never predictable) in fact the chances of this happening are about 5 per cent! Most women give birth somewhere around two weeks before and two weeks after their due date, so once you know your dates, pack your bags!

Your due date is worked out by calculating the first day of your last monthly period and by how long your cycle usually lasts. If you don’t know this you will have to have a dating scan in one of your first antenatal appointments.

To find out when your baby might be due, see our Due Date Calculator.
