Congratulations on your new arrival! I’m not surprised that you are feeling tired and imagine that this is contributing to your lack of appetite. You are right that your body requires additional nutrients and energy when breastfeeding however this is dependent on the amount of milk you are producing which at this early stage is not likely to be a large amount.

Continue to try and eat regular meals even if they are only small as this will help to maintain and eventually should increase your appetite. Whilst your appetite remains small choose more nutrient dense options such as whole milk and full fat yogurts and avoid ‘light’ or ‘reduced’ versions of food items. Try to plan ahead and be as organised as your current situation will allow. For example, shop for easy convenient meals such as pasta and if you are out of the house ensure you have snacks and a drink with you. Try cooking meals in bulk and freezing portions so when you don’t feel like cooking you still have nutritious meal options at hand. Also utilise the help and support of friend, neighbours or family who I’m sure would be happy to make you a meal if they get to hold the baby in return. Finally it is important to keep well hydrated when you are breast feeding.

Congratulations on your new arrival!

It’s quite normal for mums to feel tired with no energy after they’ve given birth, whether it’s their first, second, third, and so on. In fact, these symptoms, and a change in appetite to no appetite as you’re experiencing, or an increased appetite, are also possible symptoms of the baby blues, which pass quickly. Sometimes eating little and often helps.

It’s worth considering having a blood test to make sure you’re not anaemic.

If the way you are feeling persists, particularly if you start feeling depressed, ask your health visitor or doctor for advice. And, if there’s help on offer from family and friends, grab it with both arms!
