Hi there - I have been breastfeeding my gorgeous 2nd son succesfully for the last 18 weeks... Everything has been going well until the last few days when I developed a really painful boobie. I find that after the the first couple feeds, my right breast starts to ache and this slowly develops into horrible shooting pains in the nipple and deep in the breast. I've noticed that the centre of the nipple turns white and appears to have congealed milk which I can pick out with my fingernail. The pain usually subsides by mid aternoon, although my nipple is still tender. Has anyone else suffered with this problem? If so, I would really appreciate some advice on how to get rid of this pain... It's driving me bonkers!! Thanks, Michelle

Heya - I have a tip for mastitis relief (passed down to me!!) which is to very firmly massage your breast before and during feeding or to express, this is supposed to help to break down the blockage and relieve some pain - I understand that you do have to be very firm and start at the nipple working until the whole breast and under your arms has been massaged.
This should help speed up the relief you get with anti-biotics.

Hi Connorsmum... Thanks for your help & advice. I saw my GP late last week and he told me that I had a blockage and to go home & continue feeding as normal, however, today the pain got so unbearable I spent the whole morning in tears, (I think labour pains were more bearble :-)) Anyway, my husband helped me to pull myself together and took me up to our walk in clinic and they confirmed I have Mastisis... I have been given some antibiotics, so I'm hoping things will sort themselves out over the next few days. The Doc also told that me that putting Savoy Cabbage leaf's in your bra help to relieve pain & also unclogg milk ducts - Not sure how accurate this is, but am prepared to try anything to stop the pain. Thanks again, x.
Hi. glad you finally got some answers - dont you just hate how some GPs fob you off! i had got to the point you did where i was constantly in tears & feeling awful as i couldnt bare to feed my baby, only to see a doctor who did nothing but put me down & critise me for stopping breast feeding! i felt bad enough anyway as i wanted nothing more than to continue feeding put simply couldn't bare it. hope you've managed to persevere! it was hard with me as id only been feeding 2 weeks & still sufering with my nipples aswell! i was still seeing my midwife then due to high blood pressure & she told me about the savoy cabbage leaves so it must do something! all such a long time ago now. hope you feel better soon x

Hi Michelle. when i was breast feeding my son i developed mastitus which was alot like you've described. i ignored it at first but it got so bad i couldnt bear to feed my son anymore & sadly ended up switching to bottle feeding after only 3 weeks. biggest regret iv ever had & wish id persevered but the infection had got so bad i was in agony. i sugest you see your GP asap. mastitus is where your milk ducts get blocked & if thats what you have it needs to be treated with antibiotics straight away. they can give you antibiotics that are safe for baby so you can continue feeding. you've done a fantastic job so far! dont let this cause problems for you so get your self checked out. it may not be the same thing but either way it shouldnt be happening so hopefully your GP can help. hope this helps - good luck x
