I have a 6 week old son who used to be the most perfect little boy (and he still is!) but he now seems to cry all the time. He wakes up and cries, change his nappy he cries, hungry he cries, put him down he cries. He wont got to sleep without crying unless you hold him on your shoulder! I dont want to become one of those mums who pick up their child after 5 seconds - but Im starting not to cope with the crying!!!
He is brilliant during the night and goes 6-8 hours without feeding, but as soon as the sun is up he cries! I know people will say lucky me, but it still hurts me to see him cry so much! He is now wanting 2-3 hour feeds during the day too, so Im not getting much else done. Health visitor says im doing well but I dont feel like I am.
I dont want to resort to a dummy, but feel that I may have to. When I say he's crying its more like screaming sometimes and he goes so red!
Anyone who could help please as Im at my wits end...

I too would advise baby massage for an alternative to infacol etc. Using your index & middle fingers do tiny clockwise circles starting above the belly button in a circular motion around the stomach back up to above the belly button. I took a baby massage class and this was one of the massages recommended for trapped wind or constipation.
The other thing you could try is to gently bend baby's legs in towards the stomach and then strech them back out straight, repeat for a few minutes and this also helps to relieve some of the wind that may be trapped.
Do you have access to Grip water? This too is quite an effective remedy.
Good luck my dear - hope things improve for you both.

If he is sucking for comfort he will get too much milk and throw up what is not needed. Have you tried giving him a dummy to suck when he just wants to suck for comfort? Massage may help too- and at the very least help you feel that you are doing something. One of the hardest things about colic is how helpless it makes us feel. And your doctor is right- it almost always goes away.

hi, my son is 4 weeks old, started with colic about a week ago. I'm breastfeeding him and have been given calmosine to give him before each feed but this doesn't seem to help.i am living in france so not been able to try infrocol or other colic medicine as not sold here.has started to be sick after more feeds and has runny poo. dr doesn't seem worried, say should get better by time 12weeks. a long time til then anyone have any ideas that might help.get less sleep every night.

hi, my daughter had colic also, it seemed that she just wouldnt sleep at night or during the day, she just wanted to scream all the time. However, on the rare occations that she did sleep, i would put her in her pram, laying flat. It ment that i could easily rock her back to sleep(she liked a slightly rougher ride than her moses basket was giving her)the motion was just too tempting and would sleep much better. I also tried homeopathy for colic which did work for her.
I hope some of this helps and you get some much needed sleep soon! x
My son had colic and it started at 6 weeks and lasted until 3 months, but colic usually gets worse in the evening and as mentioned before he will tuck his little legs to his tummy in pain. If you can find a local baby massage class, not only will you meet other people with babies the same age as you but massage is great for you and your son. I also took my daughter to a crainal osteopath when she was 6 weeks old and started showing signs of colic (it never developed). Look in the yellow pages under oesteopath and find one that specialises in cranial oesteopath and babies. (please excuse my spelling if I have got it wrong). Also my am a big fan of dummies in small babies, they love comfort and you can't always be there all the time (sometimes you may need to cook dinner or have a shower etc. lol) Don't worry about giving a dummy it's no big deal, lets face it he won't be starting school with it will he. No stage lasts forever even though at the time it feels never ending. Keep your energy levels up, eat well and sleep at every opportunity, it took me till my 3rd child to really learn the value of this advise, before that i tried to be supermum but that doesn't work on 6 hours sleep. Keep your chin up you are doing a grand job, you will get though this and before long it will be a distant memory, good luck and let us know how you get on :-)

Hiya - my little boy was the same - totally different little boy to the boy we took home from the hospital - we called NHS 24 and they took us in and said it was reflux - he is now on 1ml of gaviscon after 4 of his feeds! its completely worked and is now very contented! we had 48 hours of hell where me and my partner were both crying out of frustration and the fact we hadnt slept for 48 hours! so i totally sympathise!
go to the dr and get it sorted!

Hi, i'm a dad and i have a few pointers that might help. A dummy is wonderful, we tried without and lasted a few hours... weak. The other thing we thought of is that our baby might resort to sucking her thumb and you cant take that off her...ever. She only has the dummy when she really needs it though, we dont use it to keep her quiet. We also used Dr. Browns bottles from the start with our daughter, they reduced the amount of wind she got and they are also supposed to help the effects of colic. When it comes to picking her up, do it as often as you feel the need to, we have never left our daughter to cry for any longer than 10 minutes, and that is just recently, she is 9 months now and does play up to us when she doesnt want to sleep, but when she was younger there was always a reason for the tears, find the reason and the crying stops, even if it means always cuddling, dont forget you wont be able to when they are 16 so get loads in now.. Our friend also had a son who cried constantly from birth onwards, i dont want to frighten you but it turned out to be a small hernia that once diagnosed was fixed really quickly so a visit to the doctors would probably be a good idea, at the very least it would put your mind at ease if nothing medical was found to be the problem.. ok rant over good luck. Tony.
are u sure its not wind love especially if he likes it on ur shoulder?i think ur doin fantasic, dont concentrate on anythin else other than u baby for a while.leave housework just get u2 rite.
i promise it does get beta
but if it is wind try infacol, its like a drop u put in there mouth i cant rmemeber whether its b4 a feed or after but its brilliant stuff
as for the dummy, try it,theres nothin wrong in a dummy and providin u try 2 take it off them relatively early on then its not all that hard.i jsut substituted the dummy wiv a teddy n stuck it ut
good luck
xx
