I try to play with him and distract him but sometimes he will not settle. He used to fall asleep in his cradle chair but not anymore. I wondered if the fact he suffers from bad wind would be having an impact on his sleep. He sleeps for 4/5hrs and then 3/4hrs after a feed.
As babies get older they sleep less and want to interact with people more. I assume he sleeps most of the night, if so this does not seem an abnormal amount of sleep- low but not impossibly low.
Have you tried sitting him in a cradle chair so that he can watch what is going on (he can now see better at a distance than a few weeks ago)or plying with him when he starts to cry rather than just offering the breast.
It sounds to me as if he is using you as a dummy. If he wants to suck most of the afternoon and evening you might consider a dummy (he may ofcourse refuse, breast fed babies often do). Does he have plenty of things to look at when he is awake? He ought to be reaching out soon- once he starts "making things happen" he will start playing when he is awake- and will be happier for that.

My son is now 8weeks old and since birth has not slept well during the day. We are up about half 8 and he sometimes goes back to sleep at 10am perhaps for an hour, then perhaps an hour at about 1pm. Then the afternoon is made up of lots of feeds, 10min naps, and is awake for about an hour playing. He has a real bout of crying when he takes himself off the breast a lot of the time. I wind him and walk around with him. This then lasts for several hours until 10pm when he falls asleep for about 4- 5 hours. The afternoons are exhausting and am not sure what to do to improve things. Can anyone help?
