Basically, we have 2 cats and.....I'm 12 weeks (and 4 days!) pregnant so there's still alot of time to go but I'm pretty worried about my cats with my baby, my Mam keeps scaring the life out of me by saying cats like to sit on babies as the milk smell attracts them posing the risk of suffocation!! My parents had a cat when I was born and I didn't hear of any near misses with me. What's everyone's views on this, I think it's slightly irrational to worry too much about this as I'm sure well be very vigilant but I do worry for when the baby goes into his/her own room.

We have 2 very fluffy cudderly indoor cats, and am being told the same scary storys! Firstly after reading into cats behaviours around babys and young children, cats tend to keep well away from babies in the first couple of weeks anyway especialy if they are not used to babys and if you find they are getting too close for comfort you can buy cat nets for the babys bedding.
I am worried about how my cats are going to feel as they are currently my babys and I treat them as such!
Good luck x

I think you will be fine. We have 2 cats. The outdoor one isn't bothered at all by Sam and leaves him well alone. We were worried about out little cat as she only likes me and my husband and will go for anyone else however she will let Sam pull her ears and her fur and doesn't retaliate at all. Whenever she walks into a room Sam's eyes light up and he gets all excited. We never leave them alone with Sam and always keep his nursery door shut but we haven't had any problems.

Hello - I have a cat and she has never even tried to get in the cot or sleep on my toddlers bed, she has never scratched my toddler even when he has been really rough. Having said that i also have a friend whos cat started pooing in her babies cot when they came home from hospital. Basically try not to worry as i think problems are few and far between but just keep a close eye on your cats for a few months for signs of changing behaviour.

Hi and congratulation's to you both.We had a cat(George)when Finn was born but had to have him put to sleep when Finn was about 11 months as he had a tumour. He was spoilt rotten and treated just like a baby before we had Finn!I too worried about George sitting on the baby's face. Its a great time for you get your cats ready for the new baby.Start now by closing the doors on rooms you don't want them to go in like the babies room etc.Invest in a cat net that fits on prams or moses baskets but I never needed to use mine so it was a waste of money for me.As you have already said you will be vigilant that's instinctive, and to be honest as soon as the baby cries the cats will get out of the way and find somewhere more peaceful!x

i have heard the same scare stories but no one i know has ever had a problem with there cats i feed my neighbours cat and she loves to come inhouse but basically runs away from baby even as a newborn she hated her loved the empty basket or cot but glared when baby was in it as if to say thats my place my gran always said its because babies sound like cats when they are first born well there cry does and that scares other cats and when they get bigger babies like to grab and pull fur ears tails and cats hate it and run
if your really worried buy collars with bells keep nursery room door shut especally when baby is in it and just watch how cats react my guess is they will sniff nose about and decide its nothing good and leave baby well alone

Hello there, i have the same worries as i have three cats, dude is never in though, only to eat and sleep, titch thinks she is the lady of the house and is always sleeping or following you round the house purring all the time, it's percy i'm worried about, although he's spending more and more time outside, he's a hunter and pounces on anything that moves, he'll even jump and do backflips to catch flies(which he catches first time everytime!)just worried he'll get a bit carried away when he sees those little fingers and toes wiggle! has anyone else had problems with this?

dont worry yourself too much about it i had three cats when my newborn came home and not once found them in with the baby they were too scared of him, they would get into his moses basket when he wasn't in it however and even now i'm constantly kicking them out of hos room i've gotten them all collars with bells on themm now so i can hear over the moniter when they are headin into snuggle down in his bed! it's when the baby starts crawling and chases the cats constantly that the real fun begins!

Don't worry too much until you see how the cat is with the baby. i also had my mum worry my about this, but the cat was genuinely scared of the baby awake or asleep. You can buy cat nets quite cheeply. Baby monitors are so sensative that you would hear if the cat is in the same room anyway.
