Hi - we've been TTC for 6 months and no luck yet! I know that potentially its still early days, but do you think its worth going to the doctors yet? I really don't want it to all become clinical - but I think I may be able to have a simple blood test or something? Anyone got any advice?

i wouldnt worry too much yet my husband and i were trying for 9months before we concieved i had started to worry a little but then my friend told me that bn on the pill so long before TTC could take things a bit longer. u could try the ovulation tests that can be bought in chemists and then that might help as u will know the best times to try.

Studies of couples trying for a baby suggest that it takes- on average- 5 1/2 months of trying to become pregnant. Average means that half of all couples take less than this, and half more. Six months is just over the average- so it is as you say early days.

The easiest way to check you are ovulating is to take your temperature on waking. It rises by 0.2 degrees C (0.4 F)when the levels of the hormone progesterone rise- that is immediately after ovulating.

Cervical secretions are the best quide to fertile times. These change from moist and sticky with a cloudy appearance to wet and slippy with a clear appearance at the most fertile times. If you the secretions between your fingers they stretch at fertile limes (a bit like egg white) but break when you are less fertile. . After the peak in fertility the secretions become cloudy and white- feel sticky rather than slippy and break when stretched. Secretions are absent at infertile times.

Hi Liz,

I got a simple blood test a few months ago to check that I was still ovulating, the doctor also recommended that Bruce get a sperm test done. We both had the tests and results back within 2 weeks. I think I had to have the blood test done on day 21 of my cycle.

Good luck. x
