My 1 year old squeals all the time with delight, excitement or anything else really. Is this normal? He hardly ever babbles

My nearly 1 year old squeals all the time with delight and sometime babbles but mostly squeals. I thinks its his way of expressing himself but its so cute and very normal. You can tell when their in a bed mood tho!!! no squeals just lots of throwing his toys.
my little girl is 6 1/2 months and has been squealing since she was 4 months(around that age) she hardly babbles, she reminds me of a wailing banshee sometimes LOL x

It is certainly normal to squeal with delight and excitement –and a lovely expression of feelings in babies who can’t yet talk. You should be pleased that your baby is enjoying life so much that he is expressing it in this way! I know it sometimes can be surprisingly loud and can cause stares if you are out and about –pre-verbal children do tend to make rather a lot of noise.

In terms of acquiring speech, the first stage is when babies make non-verbal sounds and make a noise to attract attention, usually also pointing to ask for things. Babbling usually comes next where they use their own version of words and these are often understood within the family such as “di di” for wanting a drink.

Babbling really starts very early with the very random noises small babies make, such as “cooing” noises or little “ahhs” and “ohhs”. Later on they add consonants for true babbling such as “da da da” or “ba ba ba”. If your baby is not making any of these kinds of sounds, do have a word with your health visitor, so that she can reassure you.
