hello everyone! Finally given up smoking!! been 2 and half months now, had a couple slip ups, like my birthday, went out on the beer, got very drunk, went to thorpe park next day, so spent the weekend smoking, gave up easily again, then had one the other day but been fine since. it's all down to the nicorette inhalators!!
with my first pregnancy i gave up smoking as soon as i found out due to problems with my sons father and his family i started smoking again when my son was 3 months old i am now pregnant with baby number 2 and im trying to give up smoking again i never had Cigarette for weeks but then some thing rather terrible happened within the family and when ever it gets brought up i head straight for the Cigarette packet. if ne 1 has any tips on how to not smoke when problems come up id be greatful x
Hi everybody! I'm a smoker and when i fell pregnant first time round i managed to stop within a few days, i cut down 4 fags first day, 3 the second day etc! Because for all u smokers you'll know the best ones! But when i had my M/C i started smoking again! Which i regretted but i needed something to keep me going!?! Now i'm on my two week wait and i want to stop again but i feel with nothing to work for i don't have the willpower! Another thing i don't know if any of you noticed this but when i fell pregnant the first time then it was a give away to everybody that i was pregnant cause i wasn't smoking, so at 12 weeks when i had my M/C everybody knew so i had so many people to tell i wasn't pregnant anymore and i decided so i wouldn't have to go through the heartache of saying those dreaded words i'd let everybody see me publicly smoke! So now i'm dreadin quitting again for everybody to suspect me being pregnant and questioning me and if i am after my two weeks once again everybody will know! I know it's bad for the baby and i know i'll b able to stop when i do get pregnant but i HATE everybody knowing! xxxxxxxxxxxxx
hi chick, well thanks for replying but i was lost as what to do so got intouch with a smoking clinic and the advisor has been brilliant.i managed a few days then went back on the fags when my hubby and i had a row (probably my fault as i was really stroppy and hormonal) but it really upset me and started me on them again, but im tryin again tomorrow.
no,knowone ever did tell me anything, other than i was a bad person for smoking and a bad mother which if im being honest made me smoke more.thats NOT support, its judgement.where as my smoking advisor ruth gave me all the facts straight up,is constantly encouraging me,i can phone her anytime i want when ever i get tempted and i told her about my slip up today and she was brilliant, she told me 'thats ok,were all entitled to mess up sometimes, the key is not to give up giving up' and thats the support i need, told to be called horrible names and told horrible things so wish me luck as im back on the patches tomorrow.i dont mean to be a pain but would you mind keeping intouch via here as it is a huge help and knowone responded before nor to the postt i put on chats and answers other than one person, sorry to be a pain,i am really thankfull that you replied to me in a nice way

Hi Stacey, sounds like you're halfway there anyway! Just a thought, if it's your stress/worry that's making you smoke more, have you tried anything to help your nerves?? Have just learned that people who are addicted to something (food, alcohol, cigarettes, whatever) are often lacking B vitamins, and it's also B vitamins that are wiped out when we get wound up and stressed. May be worth a good B complex supplement from your local health shop??
Also, have you heard of Bach Flower Rescue Remedy?? It's a little bottle with a dropper, and when you feel wounnd up, you just take a few drops and it really takes the edge off you. Natural and safe, you can get it from Boots for about a fiver. It kept me going through the first seven hours of labour (after that I yelled for pethidine)! It's brilliant stuff.
hope i dont sound like i'm suggesting a load of rubbish, like i said, i have no idea what you're up against, but I've read so much useful stuff on this course i'm doing, just hope somone can get some benefit.
a vitamin c supplement would help you too, 'cos smoking lowers your vit c levels, and you need it for your immune system.
Is this your first baby?? I have one of each i am so so lucky, they're 3 and 19 months. funny i never did get time to use this site until now!
Hi Stacey,
I haven't posted on this site before, but read your mail and felt I had to! I have no experience of being a regular smoker and can't pretend to understand what it's like to give up a habit like that. BUT I wondered if anyone has ever explained WHY it's so harmful to your baby?
Not sure what the midwives approach is..do they just say "it's harmful" or do they tell you WHY? Nothing works for me until I know why I should or shouldn't do it.
i'm doing a degree in nutrition, and that includes not just food, but anything that enters the body and affects its health. I've just done my own mother as a case study, as to why her health is so bad. Results were linked to her mother smoking throughout her pregnancy.Cigarette smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals which wipe out essential minerals (such as zinc which is needed for almost every function in the body). It can cause damage to the heart and respiratory system. My mom has heart, kidney, liver and skin disorders, and she's had thyroid cancer.
Please don't think I'm trying to frighten anyone here, just thought that if knowledge of the cause can be an extra tool, then please use it! Maybe if people knew more about what happens in your body when you breath that smoke in, then it may give you more strength to resist.
Good luck and hope you can do it!

Hi Hun. Sorry for my absense-- I've had computer probs!!!
Well done for wanting to quit and I am so sorry about your Mum.
I think the first port of call would be with your midwife-- she can advise how to do it when you are pregnant!!!! Just take one day at a time. Choose a day tostop and get through that day, then the next-- the longer you do it-- the more you can realise you can!!
Take care Lots of Love xxxx
