Tantrums and fears are quite normal at this age: almost all children have them. He now understands more about himself- and that he is seperate from you and so worries more and acts to gain attention and reassure himself that he is the most important person in your life- as you are in his.
The best way to deal with tantrums is to ignore them. Hard I know. If you can walk away without showing any expression (or lift him up and put him outside the room if that is safer). Say nothing and give away no emotion either by your body stance or your facial expression. Just withdraw. As soon as he comes back to you give him a big hug. This way he is rewarded for finishing the tantrum and punished (withdrawing your attention is the worst thing that can happen) for starting. It won't stop all tantrums but it will stop things getting worse, shorten them, and make you feel you are in control. If out somewhere simply pick him up, hold him tight and eith look him in the eye with NO expression or turn away. Hold like this until he calms down then welcome him back.
Children who have lots of fears are sometimes helped by comfort objects- teddies, blankets etc to hold when afraid. Lastly at this age they pick up on your fears and upsets. As you feel more in control again things should improve.
