Hi, I am seriously contemplating a home birth. Has anyone out there had one or having one or got any advise.
I like the thought of being at home in my own surroundings.
Good for you. I wanted a home birth but they couldn't provide 3 midwives for a twin home birth delivery so I went into hospital. Got there with an hour to spare so minimal intervention from the hospital team and a few whiffs of gas and air! There are some complications out there such as cord prolapse (as previous post) but these are not common and could happen in the delivery suite anyway (where you might be left to labour on your own and this might have happened anyway without a midwife present).
You are more likely to be comfortable in your own home and relax into the experience. You will have a midwife present and then a second for the delivery (which is sometimes more than in hospital anyway!).
I think that you are doing the right thing for you and don't let anyone put you off. This is your choice and the midwifery team should support your birth choice, just talk to them early about it and if they say that you should have booked with them differently, ask them to change your "booking" request to home birth.
You are less likely to have complications and feel better about the whole experience and remembr that you can always change your mind and go into hospital if you feel that way in labour, but it is very unlikely that you'd be able to change your mind when labouring in hospital to go home for the delivery!
Make sure that your birthing partner is also comfortable with supporting you. It might be useful to have a session with a doula (you'll need to pay for this) but they can offer support through explaining massage & relaxation techniques thus getting your partnet to be hands on and helping you through the process. My partner found this empowerng and that he had a function at the delivery as my spokesperson for my wishes and there for me and the babies. He didn't get a chance to vocalise anything though as it all happened easily. Good luck
yeah i tried to have one with my first then i had a cord prolapse and needed to be rushed to hospital to have an emergency c section he was in scbu for 2 weeks as he spent so long without oxygen, i would never do it again giving birth is to unpredictable my pregnancy had been prblem free so i naively thought the labour would be, i would seriously think about it before you decide you just never know whats gonna happen.
