Hi everyone,
I started weaning my baby a couple of weeks ago and he is doing really well. He has some solids after his lunchtime and dinnertime feeds -- about five big heaped spoons of veg or fruit puree. Previous to solids, he was having 8oz of milk five times a day and had started to wake up in the night, which is why we began giving him food.
Anyway, since he's started having solids his milk feeds have been decreasing. I knew this would happen a bit, but I'm worried that he's not getting enough liquids and I know that milk is still the most important part of his diet for some time to come. Now he will have 6oz five times a day instead, but simeetimes he won't even finish one of those. For instance, I've just given him his first feed of the day and he's only had 5oz and isn't interested in any more.
Does anyone have any advice? It would be much appreciated!

hi
i started weaning my daughter at 17 weeks due to being constantly hunger even with the hungrier baby milk.
she will only take 4oz at a time for each meal and sometimes will not take all the milk feed with her solids so i have now started to give her half her bottle first then her solids and finsh with the last bit of the milk feed and at the moment it seems to be working.
i have had 6 children and they have all gone through not wanting all their milk once onto solids and as long as you are getting enough wet nappies then i think your baby will be fine.
i hope this helps you

Hi Natalia,
Charlie is 5 and a half months old now but we first started giving him little bits of food at 18 weeks. We started with a couple of spoons with his dinnertime feed, then after a week he was still waking in the night so we increased the amount and after another week we added lunch, and soon after, breakfast. We were pretty much led by him. We only dropped his last feed the week before last and this seemed to bring his bottle amounts back up to around 7oz. It's a little bit trial and error as far as I can see, so try doing something for a few days and see if there's any change. Good luck -- we're all in this together!

Hello Jess
How old is your baby?
Mine started to fuss on his bottles and only taking 4/5oz when previously drinking 8 oz 5 times a day with his last feed at about 11pm. Should I start weaning him? He is 4 months. Also, a bit scared trying to drop the last feed at this point, but it seemed to work for you as you say. did you do that after he was having solids regularly or at the beginning?
Many thanks for your advice
Hi ladies,
Thanks for your replies. It's been a couple of weeks now since I posted and things have really improved. Charlie was having 5 feeds a day and we were struggling to get him to finish any of them. One night we tried not waking him for a bedtime feed (which we'd been giving when we went to bed, around 10.30-11.30 at night). He slept until morning quite happily and now that he's only having four feeds a day he's finishing every bottle. His average milk intake through bottles now is about 28oz a day, plus extra from adding it into his foods. So dropping that final feed seemed to do the trick! Thought I would post to say in case anyone else is having the same issue :)

Hi there-mum of 3 here!!!! They all go through it so stay calm!!! You can get baby yoghurts from boots which most love, cook his food with milk, add it into his purees-youd be amazed how you can get it in there but its really not a big issue,as long as your babys having at least a pint a day hes fine, when you think of it like that that can easily be split into a couple of bottles ad a cup here and there.Your babys tummy is absolutely tiny so it simply cant fit in his regular bottles along with the new foods so something has to give.As his appetite increases he may return to more milk. Holly was breast fed but is weaned now,shes22 mths now and has only two 90z bottles a day-a huge drop but it all settles out.Dont worry about it and enjoy the new weaning experience.-Good luck
Hiya. My baby is nearly 9 months old. He was quite big born (9lb3.5oz) and I was told that he would have a hell of alot of milk until about 115/16 months. He did drink alot , he started with 5 oz every 2 hours and it just got more and more. When he was 4 and a half months i decided to start weaning him as he was drinking at least 45ozs of milk in the day. He wouldn't just have 1 food, he would only eat a few different veg, not potatoe, but pasta and he had to have gravy with it. After 2 weeks he was having breakfast, dinner, tea but only about 30 oz of milk, which is quite a drop. Since the age of 6 months, he will only have his milk through the night and he has to be asleep else he wont drink it. And he only has , well no more than 15 oz. But he has alot of healty food during the day at his meal times. All I can say is dont worry to much, I did and now I know that it hasnt put Harley back, he stands on his own, he is nearly as tall as an 18 month old he has crawled since he was 5 months and was pulling himself up at that age as well. And he is a good weight. Dont worry, as long as your baby is happy and putting on weight. If you do still worry, try giving your baby milk whilst asleep, even if its at 11pm or later, because as i said thats how my baby wanted it. But it's worth a try. Let me know how you go on x
I was told that baby should be having at least a pint of milk a day. This can be within food and bottle. I found my daughter had this problem but it does level off and she now has a good balance. Just make sure if your baby is not that interested make sure you cook with milk! Hope this helps a bit.
