Article: Alison Brown answers your birth, bump & baby questions

I am 11 weeks pregnant and due to see the midwife on Tuesday. Will they use a doppler at my first visit and listen for the heartbeat? If so will they be able to hear it this early?

hello..really need some help?? how early in pregnancy can spd occur?? i am 12 weeks and the all to familiar spd pain that i had whilst pregnant with my daughter has returned...i have looked it up on the internet and have found some sites that say that it can occur late on in the 1st trimester..spoke to midwife today who said it is unlikely..has anyone else had this?? help!! x
Hi,
In my experience SPD tends to occur in the most extreme cases around the end of the second trimester.

SPD really is a loosening of the pelvis by the pregnancy hormones and the weight of the pregnancy.

Have you been in touch with an obstetric physiotherapist? If not then it may be worth doing so.

Kind regards
Alison

hi im currently 19 weeks pregnant and a little worried as i have lost weight and dont seem to be putting it on, i was really sick for the first 12 weeks so my midwife put the fact id lost a stone down to that but i weighed my self recently and i have lost another half a stone since she weighd me last which was only a couple weeks ago, im eating really well so i do not understand i have also been feeling unwell for past few days and nt bin sleepin well is this normal or should i worry?
Hi,

Weight gain in pregnancy is a very individual thing and women will all put weight on at different times during their pregnancy, that's why we do not routinely weigh a each appointment any more.

Maternal weight gain has very little to do with how well your baby is doing and providing you attend your antenatal checks regularly your baby's well being will be monitored.

In the early weeks if you have been plague by sickness then yes weight loss is common.

Also if you are overweight to start with then you may well not put any weight on.

Ensuring that you try and have a healthy well balanced diet will benefit both you and the baby. If your diet is poor then a multivitamin especially for pregnancy may be advised.

Kind regards
Alison

A unusual question but I'm expecting my second child I struggled to concieve so im very very nervous and anxious something will go wrong I've seen my midwife but was refused a early scan as i had a 1st healthy pregnancy with no complications, Now i have to wait another 4 weeks til I find out how far alnog I am but I'm really worried something will go wrong even though my 1st pregnancy was complication free what is the chances of this happening again ??
Hi,

All women now have a dating scan, the best time to date a pregnancy is around 10-12 weeks.

If all goes well and you have no symptoms of anything untoward happening then there is no real reason to scan before this time.

I would be reassured by your previous pregnancy and by your midwife's advice.

Kind regards
Alison
