After 2 hospital births and and a gap of 9 years I decided to try and have a home water birth. (I did not set my heart on it though) As I had my first 2 children early, I waited until 37 weeks before I purchased my pool but as soon as it arrived my partner set it up in the kitchen (just in case). I had a very short labour and was only in the pool for 40mins. I feel that the water certainly made it easier to relax and it totally took the sting out of the head crowning. For me it was a totally positive experience. I also used hypnotherapy and acupressure techniques, when I relaxed the pain eased considerably. If I can answer any questions then feel free to mail me.

Hi ya
I tried the water birth but for me the water was too cold lol I wanted it hotter but wasn't allowed. So unfortunatly for me I didn't like it, however my sister had 2 of her 3 children in the pool and swears by them, with her 3 child she had a bed birth and hated the experience.
Everyone is different and I was very open minded as I had no idea what to expect lol

Gd luck to you and in answer to question are you naked, it is up to you. I had just my bra on and you really don't care what you look like either lol. x

can i ask a daft question? do you have to be totally naked during a water birth? it is the only thing that sort of puts me off! i'm sure i probably won't be that bothered at the time just don't like the idea of being so exposed all the time! you already feel so vulnerable and being on a bed with a nightie and large blue paper towel covering your vitals at least retains some dignity- just not sure if there is a way to get around it!?
well im opting for a bikini top ha ha. i feel exactly the same way as my mums the one in the room with me...dont exactly want to bare all to my mum, tho we're like best friends still think it's abit too much ha ha. i think some people still wear just a t-shirt and stuff tho i know im taking one just incase i want to wear one of them as well.

Hi I was planning a water birth but due to merconium in my waters wasn't allowed - smg to do with monitoring, anyway I was allowed to have gas and air whist wallowing in a lovely warm bath which really helped with contractions and then when it was time to push I happened to be out being monitored so had to deliver on a bed. But because everything had been lovely and calm up til that point! I felt really in control and relaxed and ready to push the baby out. So even if you can't have and actual birth in water being in it some of the time really helps in my opinion. Good luck x

Hiya i had my son in pool at the hospital, it ws lovely and calm, the only thing i didn't like was being asked to get up when they wanted to listen to the baby, it was very quick, six hours from start to finish 3 at the hospital and an hour in the pool was 9cm when i got in and delivered in there, i was the first to hold my baby and see the sex, was magic reccomend it to anyone xx

For my 2nd baby i had a home birth and a birth pool in abox. My intention was to labour and give birth in it. When it came to it i laboured in it which was like being in heaven! It is amazing how something as simple as water can take away the pain. Unfortunatly my midwife did not have the underwater technology to listen to baby so every so often i had to stand up for her to check on babys progress which really hit home just how much the water was taking the pain away as it was more than intense when i was not in the water. Sadly i did not get to give birth in the water as my baby was being a pickle and decided not to coopperate, he went back to back and was presenting the side of his head, not good i can tell you! But all ended well as although i had to give birth on dry land as it were i did manage to stay at home and have the home birth i so wanted. I would so recomend water birth, and home birth for that matter to any one! I am expecting again and i am hoping that i will be able to labour and give birth this time in the water! Good luck with your birth plan whatever you choose and i wish you and your family all the health and happiness in the world.
I planned to have a water birth at home and bought a birth pool in a box. Unfortunately I went 16 days overdue so I had to go to the hospital anyway but managed to request a room with a pool. I only got 1 hour in the pool because my dds heart rate kept dropping and it couldn't be monitored in the pool. However that hour in the pool was so chilled out it was pure bliss. I didn't use any pain killers at all during my labour. The only down side to the pool is that it can slow things down a bit, but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you are comfortable. I would say that if you want to use a pool and you intend to wear a bikini top, put it on before you get too far advanced otherwise you just can't be bothered. I ended up in the pool in my bra and it got covered in blood when my daughter was placed on my chest (much later) as I was connected to a drip (for fluids) so couldn't take my top off before I got into the pool. I definitely want to use the pool again this time but I have been put off the idea of a home birth, so if anyone wants to buy an unused birth pool in a box with new liner, it will probably be for sale.

I had a water birth and would highly recommend it. I found that because of really intense back pain with contractions i could only get comfortable when in the water. The support the water gives your body is amazing. I had a pretty short labour (only spent 4 hours at the hospital before my daughter was born) and more than half of that was in the birth pool. I would suggest that you try for one - especially if you find that a bath eases any discomfort you have at the moment! Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy!
