Averages are just that- the age when half the children out there can do some thing- and half the children out there cannot. It is not uncommon for children not to say anything at this age and no indication of intelligence. By all accounts Einstien- one of the most brilliant men who ever lived - did not speak until he was two. Its too early to worry- but worth checking. Does your daughter understand at least some of what you say? Does she use hand body signs- such as lifting her arms up to be picked up? Does she make noises to mean "more" ? Does she make you understand when she has had enough to eat? It is understanding which is - at this age- more important than producing the right sounds.

All children of this age understand more than they can say- and for some this gap can be very large. This is especially true for children with hearing problems- so to put your mind at rest ask your GP or health visitor/baby clinic if she can have a developmental hearing test. If there is dyslexia in your family (as there is in mine) speach is sometimes very delayed becuase children have difficulty hearing and repeating the little sounds that make up words.
But really it is too early to worry!

Unlikely- I think she probably just finds it a bit harder than the average toddler to make the right sounds. My youngest spoke much sooner than his older sister (who like your daughter was saying nothing at 14 months). This late talking daughter is now a high flying doctor: it did not hold her back for long!

is there anything i can do to help her along?

she does lift her arms to be picked up and she knows her own name and the knows to look for the cat when we call their name. someone told me that because she has an older sister that could be why is that true?
