she wont stay still!

does anyone else's one year old baby refuse to cooperate with nappy changes? I've started to give in and change her while she stands up and plays (and sometimes continues to run around!) and as funny as it is watching this giggling little madam and her pink bottom wiggling around the room it's getting a bit much when she's had a major bowel explosion. help!

The general tips given to make nappy changing easier would include trying to get it over as quickly as possible if a child has a tendency to wriggle away, getting everything ready before you even bring the child to do it so that they don’t have to wait for longer while you collect things. It sometimes helps to have a special toy to hand that they can play with while you get the job done, or an interesting mobile hanging above a changing mat to keep them entertained. Some toddlers will stay interested for long enough if you chat or sing or say a nursery rhyme.

You don’t say how old your baby is but it sounds as though she is already walking around, which makes it a bit more difficult. There is no easy answer to this, but it is a mistake to treat it completely like a joke or she will just think it is an excuse to have fun and think you don’t mind. You need to act a little bit firm about it and hold her on the mat until you at least get it done, but ideally keeping her amused so she doesn’t get upset.
I don't know why you're under the impression that I treat it as a joke, it might seem funny but I'm not daft enough to let her think I find it funny. my problem was that I'd tried all the stuff you said before I posted my question and it didn't work. anyway she's stopped being naughty at nappy times and now just lies or stands (depending on her mood) and talks to me in her own funny little way. guess she was just testing boundries after all, and that's still on going. thanks everyone else though for your input. no doubt the little madam will have a whole new challenge for me very soon lol! x x

Hi all
My daughter went through this stage of being wriggly at nappy change time. It didn't last for too long so don't get too stressed about it but I agree that it's not a good idea to make it into a joke. Try to keep serious about it but also try not to get cross with them as it is just a phase and they don't mean to be a pain! My daughter is now 21 months and well past that stage. She's onto much more fun things now like constantly getting out of bed every evening!!! xx

Aww Well i've got that proplem with my 8months nearly 9 month girl although she doesnt run around she wont sit still she rolls over and craws off she also pulls at the nappy when you get it on half way! She also goes to the sofa to stand up so i just shove it on while she's stood up. somtimes you can distract her put other times she just wants to get away. She kicks her arms and legs. The worst was the over day when she did a big poo and i was trying to keep her lay down to get the nappy off and her arms and legs were kicking and trying to wipe her rolling over and crawling off. It was a nightmare it took me about 20mins and i was cover in poo in nice. One thing that is worrying me though is did your one year old ever stand up in the bath.Because at the moment she keeps standing in the bath and its go hard to wash her i've got a bath mat to stop her slipping but she keeps pulling at it which she finds funny. I've looked for things for her keep her safe but they all for like up to 3 months and shes nearly 9 in a few days. Just wondering if you had any ideas.... Thanks

My baby girl is almost 10mths and wrestles all the time now while changing nappy. I give her the wipes packet to crinkle in her hands or something else to hand that might distract and if all else fails, I 'sumo' her with one hand as I can't imagine changing her standing up with the nappies she's having at the minute - teething nappies are yuk! I think I used pull up pants when my son was going through the same thing but he was at the walking stage, as you can rip them both sides and sort of grip them together as you pull them off and grab most of it off at the same time...yuk, yuk, yuk...I can't wait until she can wipe her own bottom!
