i visited the midwife today and she said that my baby stopped growing two weeks ago and that my blood pressure was raised. i thought she would of referred me to the hospital but she just said she would do another ante natal check in 3weeks. i never experienced this problem with my first child and i am just wondering what could of caused this to happen.

I am not sure how far on in your pregnancy you are, but none the less with what you are saying I feel that you do need to be checked over again. Does the hospital where you are booked to have your baby have an Antenatal Assessment Centre or a phone number where you have access to a midwife at anytime? If it does it may be worth ringing them and discussing your concerns rather than waiting for your next midwife appointment failing that speak to your GP. The measurement of the womb/uterus has been standardized in the last 10-15years by measuring it with a tape measure, 1cm for each week of pregnancy, so at say 35 weeks I would expect you to be about 35cm (+/- 1cm). If a measurement is found to be less or more than that for the gestation then it requires further investigation usually in the form of a scan. Scans are a more accurate way of assessing fetal growth and show us if further monitoring of the pregnancy is needed. I recently had a lady who was referred to the antenatal assessment centre measuring 33cm at 38 weeks. The scan was able to reassure us and the mum that the baby was growing normally and there was no need for further intervention. A raised blood pressure also needs investigating and this can be associated with babies being smaller.

think you should get it checked out! why is she leaving you 3 weeks? thought if the baby stopped growing you would get at least a scan to check it out and maybe decide what would happen from there? how far on are you in your pregnancy? would they help you deliver? they mustn't be too concerned if they are waiting, maybe they hope the baby will grow again! i'm not sure what could have caused it to happen but i know i would be asking questions and wouldn't be able to rest til i knew! could you speak to hospital and get them to examine you to find out what's going on- they are often more than happy to do this least of all to put your mind at rest- especially if your blood pressure is up- did she do a urine sample? contact the delivery suite or ante natal clinic at hospital and tell them how worried you are- i would be insisting on being seen! don't want to stress you out or anything but would urge you to get checked over! please do and let us know how you get on!X
