hi I’m breastfeeding and my baby is 4 month's and used to go to bed at 8 and sleep until 5 then back down to 7-8 but for the last few month's she wakes up allot more - I’m now getting up at 12, 3, 6 then 9 every feed she takes between 6 and 8 oz (when I express) what can i do to make my baby sleep longer - I feed on demand - I have tried supplementing with formula and have tried baby rice for a week now it hasn’t helped. I don’t know what to do we have a night time routine which is the same every night and hasn’t changed she usually gains weight every week around 7oz and during the day she takes a big feed every 3 hours and little feeds in between. i always let her feed on one breast until she comes off i change her nappy and offer the other side which she doesn’t always take.how can i get her to sleep longer through the night? thankyou

There is such thing called the 4 month sleep regression - basically, a baby goes through massive psychological development at certain points, 4 months being one of them. my son went through a similar stage and my advice to you is this - hang in there! stop the baby rice and formula, it wont make any difference. and it will affect your breast milk supply. I promise, it will pass. Feed on demand through the night, it will ensure your supply stays high. your baby may be going through a growth spurt, or teething, in which case it is only natural that she will wake to breastfeed. Im afraid there is no kind way to make your baby sleep for longer. it will pass, i promise. Human children arent generally physiologically capable to sleep through the night until at least 18months. Obviously all children are different, but dont feel alone. Trust me, there is a million other mums awake with their 4 month old sleep-regressing babies at the same time as you! you will sleep again, just remember this is a really short time in your babies life and it will pass so quickly, and by breastfeeding on demand you are doing the best thing in the world for her.

I'm in the same position, i think some of the wakenings are now a habit but i've put alot of them down to teething as my little girl's first tooth has just started to cut through the gum. Hopefully the routine will settle back to normal once it's over. I also know in my case the feed's i give her on her awakenings are for comfort as this gets her back off to sleep after i've used bonjela and given some calpol as she has rice twice a day and upto 10oz. Maybe try using some bonjela with a cuddle to see if it helps at first.

when I was down at the parent toddler last week, there were a couple of girls there that were breastfeeding but had just changed to formula. when I asked them why they said that the babies went longer between feeds. their babies were 6 months. you say that you supplement with formula? I would speak to your hv for advice.
are you expressing for the night feeds? if you are you could gradually reduce the amount so that baby will learn that its not enough to bother, maybe you could change one of the night feeds to water?
