IVF success rates could rocket

Hopeful mums undergoing IVF could face an 80 per cent success rate as soon as next year

Hopeful mums could welcome a healthy baby quicker than ever before thanks to a new test being developed by British scientists.

Right now only around a third of IVF transfers in the UK are successful, a figure that is rising by only about one per cent every year, meaning a woman who produces eight embryos may have only one that will result in pregnancy.

It's a very inefficient process because more than half of all embryos are chromosomally abnormal and won't result in a baby. Even a third of embryos that are normal will not implant. But with this test, women could be saved the heartache of numerous unsuccessful implants and get pregnant much quicker.

The test looks at how mitochondira, cells for respiration and energy production that are crucial for the development of healthy babies, behave inside each embryo. Experts have discovered that some embryos have far too much mitochondrial DNA and will therefore never develop into a baby. By screening embryos to for this they could far improve the success rate of IVF.

A clinical trial in New York resulted in a pregnancy success rate of around 80 per cent, and the test could come to the UK as soon as next year.
