Discovering you are pregnant is always an apprehensive yet exciting time, but after you have tested yourself with a home pregnancy test and got that BFP - (that's big fat positive to anyone not familiar with internet chatroom speak)- what next?
Assuming that you have tried a Home Pregnancy test, and assuming it was positive, it's time to make an appointment with your GP. The GP probably won't do any additional pregnancy testing because home pregnancy tests are now so reliable (about 99.9% accurate), that is all the information they need. You need to tell your GP when the first day of your last monthly period was and how many days your cycle usually lasts and they will try to work out your due date. If you don't know the exact date of when your last monthly period was, you are likely to be given a dating scan sometime before thirteen weeks. Your GP will ask you which hospital you want to have your baby in. Most larger cities have two or more hospitals so take into consideration how close they are to your house and to your work as you may be going to antenatal appointments there in work hours. Your doctor may or may not perform a blood test on you, or ask for a sample of urine - this all depends on your practise and if not, these tests will happen at your first antenatal appointment.
Your GP may also measure your height and take your weight so that in future appointments your weight gain can be monitored.
Now is the chance to ask yor GP any questions, for example, will they provide shared care with the midwives, where half your antenatal appointments are at the maternity unit or clinic and half are at your GP's? If you still smoke, have drunk or taken any drugs you may want to tell your GP, but you can also tell this information to a midwife who can help you with your query.
From here, your GP will inform the hospital of your choice that you are pregnant and you will probably be contacted via the post with details of your next antenatal appointment.

Now is also a good time to start eating healthily. You can get additional folic acid from foods like broccoli, leafy green vegetables, asparagus. Fruits such as: oranges, strawberries, cantaloupes and other melons. Grains like whole wheat pasta, bread and fortified breakfast cereal also contain folic acid. Other sources include: Eggs and sunflower seeds.
