Double buggies ideal for 2 little royals

Double buggies ideal for 2 little royals Kate-280

Kate, with two little royals now you may be in need of a double buggy, but don't worry, Chris Riley takes buggies for twins and siblings for a ride

Double buggies can be 'the sibling solution', and if like Kate you have not even two years between your tots, a double buggy is a must gor getting around.

BEST FOR...TWINS AROUND TOWN Joolz-Geo250
Joolz Geo Twin
■ £1,099

IN A NUTSHELL
What is it about the Dutch and supercool buggies? Joolz, founded in 2004, is a mere baby compared to Bugaboo, but the brand new Geo, which only hits the stores this month, proves it's a serious competitor.

FEATURES
A clever modular design with a lightweight chassis (8.5kg) that helps keep the weight down in all the Geo's configurations. As a twin, it's suitable from birth; the duo, for baby and toddler, starts at £999. It has lockable swivelling wheels and four- wheel suspension, can be unfolded with one hand, the handlebar height is adjustable and both bumper bar and handlebar are leatherette.

BEST BITS
Inline double buggies are far more compact than side-by-side styles, but not many are set up to take newborn twins. This is, and with a maximum width of just 59cm, there's absolutely no compromise on ease of manoeuvrability, so you won't face access issues while out and about. You can also customise the bumper bar with a special message, so your little ones have a truly personalised ride.

NIT-PICKING
While the Geo boasts decent storage when set up as a single buggy, that all disappears in the twin configuration.

iCandy Apple 2 Pear Tandem Twin
■ £580

IN A NUTSHELL
There's no arguing that iCandy knows how to put a buggy together, and this pioneer – the first double with the footprint of a single buggy to make it to the marketplace – is a handsome beast indeed.

FEATURES
The seat unit is suitable from six months – for your littlest bundle of joy, you'll need a carrycot or newborn nest, both of which must be bought separately. It weighs 12.5kg, has three world- or parent- facing seating options, a three-position handle and lockable swivelling front wheels. It measures 80.6 x 60.2 x 111.7cm; the neat fold reduces this to 89.5 x 60.2 x 33.9 cm. It's freestanding when collapsed.

BEST BITS
Compact, adaptable, stylish, this should give you years of service. Any old grumbles about the size of the newborn accessory have been fixed, with the newborn nest 29 per cent bigger than the original carrycot option.

NIT-PICKING
Adding anything to the basic chassis/seat/raincover pack bumps up the price: carrycots retail at £175 and nests at £90.

BEST FOR...RELIABILITY Britax-250
Britax B-Agile Double
■ £300

IN A NUTSHELL
Rugged and durable side-by- side twin transportation.

FEATURES
Suitable from birth, this has an aluminium chassis (104 x 105 x 78cm), multiple recline positions, a one-pull fold (it's freestanding when collapsed), an adjustable handle, lockable swivelling front wheels, removable seat units and detachable showerproof hoods. Max weight: 15kg.

BEST BITS
The fold is very neat – there won't be a day when you're not grateful for this. There's a peekaboo flap so you can check whether your little ones are asleep. The extra storage in the canopy is a bonus, too.

NIT-PICKING
Unlike some twin strollers at this sort of price point – but by no means all of them – there's no parent-facing seat option.

BEST FOR...URBAN ADVENTURES PhilandTeds-dot-250
Phil&Teds Dot
■ £399 plus £109

IN A NUTSHELL
Worried about the sheer size of some of these double buggies? Worry no more.

FEATURES
Inline single-to-double adaptability (the extra £109 is for the double kit) for newborn and toddler. Weighs 12kg and offers no less than 21 riding options, including parent- facing mode. It has 10in air-filled tyres, multiple seat recline options, an adjustable handle and a compact, one- hand fold that collapses the Dot to just 76 x 26 x 59cm. Max weight: 20kg (front seat) and 15kg (rear seat).

BEST BITS
This is a really neat and compact design, so you won't have any issues getting it on and off public transport, in and out of shops or round galleries and museums, and the folded size is a bonus if you're pushed for storage space. As with all Phil&Teds buggies, the kerb pop couldn't be easier thanks to the clever frame geometry. Main seat height is a generous 65cm, good for a rangy toddler.

NIT-PICKING
Given all the pluses it really is a small thing, but when fully tot-loaded, there's little room for stowing change bags, etc.

BEST FOR...VALUE Hauck-250
Hauck Duett
■ £299.99

IN A NUTSHELL
Won't help you in a multiple birth scenario, but is a clever, multifunction tandem design for tots of differing ages at a very competitive price.
FEATURES
Top seat suitable from birth (second seat is six-months- plus) with carrycot-to-buggy- seat adaptability and front- and rear-facing options. Detachable second seat (which adds a couple of kg to the top-line weight of 14.5kg) with recline and swivelling, lockable front wheels. There's a one-hand height-adjustable handle. The dimensions are 104 x 61 x 111cm (then the fold takes this down to 102 x 61 x 48cm). Max weight: 15kg.
BEST BITS
From carrycot to buggy, single to double and back again, no conversion takes much more than a matter of seconds; it will also take a car seat. Smooth, parent-friendly push, too.
NIT-PICKING
You can have this in absolutely any colour you want – so long as it's black.

BEST FOR...STYLISH VERSATILITY bugaboo-donkey-250
Bugaboo Donkey
■ from £1,149

IN A NUTSHELL
With the innovative Donkey, the clever Amsterdam-based designers of drool-worthy pushchairs have come up with a convertible buggy that, one way or another, provides a solution to just about every possible transportation need.

FEATURES
As a duo (priced as above), it'll take your newborn and toddler; in twin mode (from £1,279), your two tots can be seated facing each other, you or the world. It has independently reclinable and adjustable seats, it is car-seat adaptable and has multi-terrain air-filled wheels (with additional wheel positions for ploughing through sand or snow). Measuring 87 x 60 x 40cm, it weighs 15kg – also the maximum weight per child.

BEST BITS
From a single buggy to the duo or twin, the Donkey converts with just three simple clicks. Yes, that's right, three. Oh, and back down again. It really could not be more simple.

NIT-PICKING
At this price, it's not a buggy for a potentially troublesome few months or so – it's an investment, so make sure you'll get maximum use out of it.

BEST FOR...SCANDI CHIC stokkee-250
Stokke Crusi
■ £799 plus £269

IN A NUTSHELL
The Crusi is one of those brilliant Stokke products that's compatible with everything from carrycots to car seats – but we love it for its stylish toddler option.

FEATURES
The main seat is suitable from birth and has five seat-position options – three of them parent-facing, two forward- facing – and the Crusi has lockable swivel wheels. The dimensions are 96 x 228 x 63cm (103 x 33 x 63cm when folded) and the combined chassis and seat weight is 12.4kg. The sibling seat accessory (with adaptors) must be purchased separately, hence that £269 figure above. Max weight: 15kg.

BEST BITS
You take good looks as read with Stokke, but when you have precious cargo times two on board, being easy to push and manipulate is key – and with its compact design, this delivers brilliantly. Great, too, that your toddler can load themselves into their seat.

NIT-PICKING
While it's perfect for the classic newborn/toddler combo, if you have twins, then you'll need something else. And that sibling seat adds another 3.8kg to the Crusi's weight.
