Tips for the perfect family picnic
In case the event had passed you by, it is national picnic week this week (June 16th-22nd). Founder and Chief Pie Maker of Higgidy, Camilla Stephens has prepared her top picnic tips for the perfect picnic.
1. Picnic anywhere
You can have a picnic anywhere: take a trip to the local park or just head out to your back garden to make the most of a sunny afternoon. If it's rainy, you can lay out a picnic blanket in your living room and pretend!
2. Stick to what you like
It's easy to get carried away when making a picnic. Rather than making 20 different dishes, just make a few things you really like. If you take too much you will just end up carrying it home again.
3. Finger foods
For the easiest of picnics, stick to finger food like sausage rolls – then you don't even need knives and forks.
4. Jazz up water
For a refreshing drink, stuff a couple of sprigs of mint, or some sliced lemon, into a large bottle of water.
5. Use a cool bag
Picnic hampers look lovely but are often heavy to carry. I prefer a good cool bag – much easier if you're off on a walk, and they keep the food nice and fresh too.
6. Use a table cloth
It can be tricky to find a decent sized picnic blanket that everyone can squeeze onto. A large table cloth can double up as a picnic rug or, if you're crafty, try sewing two picnic rugs together to make one twice as big.
