Days out raise money for the Red Cross Red-Cross-gardens-280

Summer months are the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors with the kids and this year all over the UK gardens are open to families as part of the Red Cross Open Gardens scheme.

Entrance fees go directly towards supporting the work of the British Red Cross at home and overseas, but children go free at many venues.

Here are just a few gardens taking part across the UK.

Dassels - Hertfordshire

Meet the owners' cute alpacas and explore 20 acres of gardens including a wild flower meadow. Dassels Bury, Ware.

Aydon Grange - Northumberland

This colourful garden has rhododendrons, azaleas, herbaceous borders and shrubs, with a fantastic view over the River Tyne.
Opens: 31 May 2015, 2pm-5:30pm


The Old Manor - Reading

Musicians play in the afternoon, there is also a knot garden, orchard, extensive lawns and an ancient oak avenue.
Opens: 24 May 2015


Grundle Farm - Norfolk

Bring a picnic, there will be a ceilidh between 6.30-9pm, as well as children's activities and a musical showcase.
Opens: 20 June 2015, 4pm-9pm


Michael's Folly - Hertfordshire

Wander through a garden with 'earth' labyrinth, kitchen garden and goat paddock, then relax in a Mongolian yurt with tea.
Opens: 20 Sept 2015; 2pm-5pm


Rockcliffe - Gloucestershire

A pathway flanked by giant topiary doves, leading up to a dovecote. Walking shoes are recommended!

Thornley House - Hexham

Spot the feline theme in the child-friendly garden at Thornley House. Real cats and ornamental animals throughout.
Opens: 30 Aug 2015, 2pm-5pm


Styford Hall - Northumberland

There's a tennis court, cricket lawn and boules – and, for an extra £3.50, you can even take a dip in a heated pool.
Opens: 14 June 2015 2pm-6pm


The Old Vicarage - Spalding

Interesting plants for gardeners, hide-and-seek for children, a safe haven for wildlife – and some good tea and cake!

Down Farm House - Hampshire

Step back in time in this garden converted from an old farmyard using many original features still incorporated.
Opens: 17 May 2015 to 18 May 2015 2pm-5.30pm

Rayrigg Hall - Cumbria

Loads to keep children busy at Rayrigg Hall on the shores of Lake Windermere. A treasure map will keep them entertained.

Maenan Gardens - Conwy

Your little ones will enjoy a treasure hunt round the gardens - with a prize and a refreshing drink at the end.
