COSTA BRAVA, SPAIN (FLIGHT TIME 1+ HOURS)

Why go?

The coastline north of Girona is geared up for weekending families from Barcelona: expect safe, sandy bays ringed with excellent fish restaurants, and lively towns with café-fringed squares.

What to do?

Head to the area’s prettiest beach, the smile-shaped cove at Aigua Blava. Then grab a coconut drink from the beach seller and savour the blissful, pine-scented breeze.

Where to stay?

A villa means you can do all the washing, sterilising and puréeing you need. Plus, with plenty of room, you can even pack the grandparents! Vintage Travel (vintagetravel.co.uk) has the area’s best selection: Four-bed El Pins, with its gated pool, is a snip, from £395 per week. Book flights from London Luton to Girona with Ryanair, from £150 return (ryanair.com).

Don’t miss!

Lunch on the tree-shaded terrace at Hostal Sa Rascassa (hostalsarascassa.com), so near the sheltered cove at Aiguafreda that you can smell the sea. Hoover up the delicious cheese and pear fiocchi pasta, while owner Oscar and his family spoil your baby rotten.

SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT (FLIGHT TIME 5+ HOURS)

Why go?

If holidays have always meant spoiling yourselves in exotic locations, don’t worry, you don’t have to turn to camping just yet. With guaranteed sunshine and an exotic feel – but no need for jabs – ‘Sharm’ is the ultimate bridge-gapper.

What to do?

In the unlikely event that beach fatigue sets in, buy souvenir slippers and spices at a Bedouin souk, or spend evenings spotting shooting stars in a clear night sky.

Where to stay?

They’ve made a big effort to please parents at the five-star Ritz-Carlton, right on a pristine stretch of Red Sea. The result? Baby food in the minibar, cots and baths on request, and a toddler-proof ‘Protect Our Little Ones’ programme. Thomson (thomson.co.uk) has a week, including London flights, from £755pp B&B (kids under two go free).

Don’t miss!

A night in the private room at romantic Italian restaurant, La Luna. The hotel can arrange a babysitter before you arrive.

KALKAN, TURKEY (FLIGHT TIME 3+ HOURS)

Why go?

Babies who adore star treatment will love this low-key seaside town in an unspoiled corner of southern Turkey: the locals treat kids like VIPs.

What to do?

So untrodden that turtles pop in to breed between May and October, while gasp-inducing Patara Beach is just 20 minutes’ drive away. Pack a picnic of pide (Turkish pizza) from town, build your appetite with a pushchair-race in the sand, then eat by the shady Lycian ruins of ancient Patara.

Where to stay?

Hotels in the area aren’t geared up for tots, but there are some great villas. The Stone House is stunning, with three bedrooms, a pool and sea views – and it’s kitted out for kids, too (cot, kids cutlery etc). From £590 per adult and £445 per child for a week, including London flights and car hire (simpsontravel.com).

Don’t miss!

Turkish ice cream is amazingly underrated. The chocolate flavour is best tried on the terrace of the Café del Mar (cafedelmarkalkan.com).

ANTIGUA (FLIGHT TIME 8+ HOURS)

Why go?

Jetlag isn’t kind to babies– experts recommend adding three days to a trip to help them recover. But the time difference in Antigua is just four hours, meaning no sleepless nights.

What to do?

Go to Turners Beach to board Calypso Franco’s glass-bottom boat, and give your little one their first glimpse into an underwater world.

Where to stay?

Carlisle Bay is a chic boutique hotel for families. There’s an activity programme for kids and a night-time babysitter service. For you? A heavenly spa, restaurants and a cinema. Caribtours (caribtours.co.uk) has a week’s B&B, including flights from London, from £2,515 per adult and £1,110 per child under 15 (under twos go free).

Don’t miss!

The view out to sea from Shirley Heights (shirleyheightslookout.com). Go on Thursday or Sunday, when a 16-piece steel band will keep all of you entertained.
