Top tips: How to shop the January Sales!
Christmas is officially over, and that can mean only one thing; it’s time to bag a bargain or two in the January sales! Sales shopping requires perseverance and military precision if you have something specific in mind that you want to pick up. But if you’re anything like us, you’ll love bagging a bargain! So here’s our guide to the best way to tackle the January sales:
1. Plan what you want to buy. Do you really need another pair of black boots or that Santa dress for your little one? Buying something just because it’s in the sale is actually a waste of money! Instead make a list of things you actually need (a new winter coat for your little one, or a crib for your impending arrival for example) and stick to it. That way you won’t be tempted to look in other departments for things you don’t want or need!
2. Arrive early. Not only will this mean the best pick of the stock (meaning you’re more likely to get what you want) it also means the store is likely to be less busy and that the stock will be tidier on the rails. I can understand why people are put off when shops look like a jumble sale, with clothes strewn all over the floor, but you have to be prepared to rummage and look past the chaos to get what you want.
3. Go alone! If you can, leave your other half and little ones at home. It will be much easier to duck and weave through the crowds if you aren’t pushing a pram or carrying a toddler. If you shop alone you can also stock up on presents for any upcoming birthdays (a great money saving tip!) without tiny eyes seeing what you’re buying.
4. You don’t even have to go in-store! Although often you will find further reductions, and a better range of products in-store, if you just can’t face the crowds, don’t overlook online shopping. Start early (most online stores start their sales on Boxing Day) and many bargains can be had from shopping online. Sign up to email newsletters for all your favourite stores and you will be sure to get advance notice of any upcoming reductions and offers.
5. Be vigilant and always keep your receipt! When buying clothes in the sales, always check the label on the garment not the hanger. Things often get put back on the wrong hangers, meaning you might not be buying the size you want. Also make sure you keep your receipts: that way if something is damaged or wrong when you get it home, you will still get the amount you paid for it back: without the receipt if something has been reduced further, you will only receive the lower selling price.
6. It’s never too early to think about Christmas! If you’re a forward planner, or you just like to get the best value for money possible, now is a great time to think about next Christmas. You’ll find massive discounts on Christmas cards, tree decorations and wrapping paper in the January sales. If you have somewhere to store these, why not stock up now?!
