Pregnancy weight linked to diabetes

Getting pregnant while overweight or obese could increase your child's risk of developing diabetes later in life.

Diabetes UK have said that children born to women with gestational diabetes – as a result of pregnancy hormonal changes – were six times more likely to go on to develop type 2 diabetes themselves.

Gestational diabetes affects around one in five pregnancies – and the risks are higher for women that are overweight.

In a recent study, 31 per cent of teenagers whose mothers had gestational diabetes during pregnancy developed type 2 diabetes or had raised glucose levels.
