More twins being born with IVF increase

More twins, triplets and quads are being born as more mums are having fertility treatments

Two babies

In England and Wales, 10,839 women gave birth to twins in 2014, 148 gave birth to triplets and two to quads. The rate of multiple births increased to 16 per 1,000 women giving birth from 15.6 in 2013. In 1976 it was only 9.6 per 1,000.

The report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said with approximately 18,000 IVF babies born in the UK in 2013, with the chance of one in six being multiple pregnancies compared to one in 80 for natural conception, the rise in IVF is going to significantly contribute to the multiple birth rate.
