Why having a big family is good for your heart

A new study from the University of California has found that having four or more children can protect a woman’s heart. They found women who experience four or more pregnancies are less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who never have a baby.

The study of nearly 1,300 post-menopausal women from south California found the key effect of having a large family was prevention of stroke. Mothers of large families were half as likely to die from the condition.

The results indicate that the higher level of pregnancy hormones mothers with large families experience has a lasting effect on the blood vessels, reducing the risk of heart attacks and heart disease.

Lead author of the study, Marni Jacobs, wrote in the journal Fertility and Sterility said: 'Women in this study had less CVD mortality risk if they had more than four pregnancies. The mechanism by which this decreased risk occurs is unknown, however, it may reflect higher fertility in healthier women, the effect of prolonged exposure to higher levels of circulating oestrogen... or the added social support from a larger family.'

According to the Daily Mail, Professor Donald Peebles, spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said it could be that some of the childless women were infertile, which itself could raise the risk of heart disease.

As well as having a large family, you can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or other heart disease by maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting smoking.

People of all ages who are physically active are less likely to get cardiovascular disease than those that are inactive, which could be why running around after four children reduces your heart attack risk! And a healthy diet helps to reduce your risk of developing heart disease, or if you've already got heart problems it will help to protect your heart.

Well my Grandad had 15 children in total but he passed away in his early 50's after suffering a heart attack - I know this study say's women but it also says it's because your running around after children that your heart becomes more healthy - well I think he proved that wrong , infact maybe it has the opposite affect? xx
I think there may be a limit on how many is a good thing lol. Alos medical factors have to be taken in to consideration and the fact that people generally didn't live as long back then anyway. Ahh 15 kids! I bet Christmas was amaaaazing! I've always wanted a HUGE family as I grew up with a big one and lots of extended family. I want 6 but OH only wants 2 :'( think we'll have to find a compromise once we see how well we take to numero uno first lol. I do hope this is true as my Mum has 4 kids and she doesn't half run around after us! Even now, I'm 23, married and pregnant and she STILL wont stop hehe. xxx

15 children how did he have time to spend quitly 1 on 1 time with each kid... i think 3 s enough and people shouldnt have anymore after that so you can have the time with each child any more that that and your children miss out on time with their parents
I'm one of four and my older sister has autism, epilepsy and a learning disability and yes it restricted the time I could spend with my Mum and Dad but not as much as a lot of my friends who are only children and who's parents constantly worked. I had a great childhood and spent lots of time with my Mum growing up. I understand if you can only manage 3 kids but my Mum did and still does an amazing job raising all four of us and we have a the pleasure of being a big, close happy family which has far more advantages than disadvantages. Being from an Irish Catholic family all my Aunts and Uncles have huge families and have given their kids amazing upbringings, spent lots of time with them and having siblings to guide you and advise you can be priceless! x
