Oh, dear: sneezing season is here. Nutritional therapist Julie Silver's tips can help little ones forget their allergies and enjoy summer

Itchy eyes, continuing sneezing, rashes are just some of the frustrating symptoms summer allergies can bring. So what factors can add to these summer allergy symptoms?

• Overload of chemicals and toxins

• Stress

All these factors can add to the symptoms of summer allergies, so we asked Julie to share the secret of how best to tackle this and help everyone enjoy the summer.

Strengthen your immune system

Eating local honey is a great way to boost your immune system. Start introducing a teaspoon a month before the hayfever season. Taking natural supplements such as quercetin, vitamin C and bromelain are also good ways to boost the immune system and prevent allergies.

Instead of chemical based products use 100% natural ones such as a natural pollen barrier balm like HayMax which is applied to the base of the nostrils to trap pollen and dust to prevent it entering the body.

Improve your diet

Wheat and other gluten rich products, dairy, sugar, artificial additives and sweeteners, alcohol and caffeine can all dehydrate the body and are best avoided as much as possible.

Opt for gluten free grains such as brown rice and millet, also quinoa and buckwheat. Eating these as whole grains is most hydrating, however, as an alternative you can get gluten free pasta and bread. Do look for the most natural ones that have no added sugar and chemical enhanced ingredients.

Vegan proteins such as beans, pulses, tempeh, nuts and seeds would be less acidic and more hydrating than animal proteins, especially red meat. Pork is the most acidic and dehydrating of all the red meats.

Include lots of mineral rich vegetables in your diet, especially green leafy varieties such as kale and spring greens.

Replace black tea with Rooibos/Redbush tea which is naturally caffeine free and contains antioxidants.

Avoid dehydration

To avoid getting dehydrated, drink up to 2 litres, which will vary among individuals but is a good benchmark to aim for.

Reduce chemicals and toxins

Toxic chemicals can be found in unnatural body products, hair products, cleaning products, paints and even upholstery in cars, furniture and carpets. Any product you use on your body and hair will enter the bloodstream in about 10 minutes. Replacing these products with natural products can really help ease symptoms. Cars over 2 years old emit far less toxic chemicals than new ones so it is best to buy a second hand car.

Reduce stress

Do your best to avoid being out in polluted areas, keep stress to a minimum by practicing relaxation and breathing techniques. Such techniques could be taking deeper breaths especially when feeling stressed, doing yoga, tai chi, qi gong, taking breaks in between jobs, listening to relaxing music, having a massage and being more mindful when carrying out any tasks.
