Your baby's development

By now your baby’s personality and temperament will be starting to emerge as she giggles, coos, wriggles and cries at different sounds and people. Research shows that your baby’s self-awareness starts to surface around now as she finds her fingers and then discovers her toes. This can make nappy changes tricky as she plays at catching her feet. At the moment your baby doesn’t yet understand that those toes and fingers are hers and still thinks that she is part of you.

Rolling over

At around two to three months old you may notice your baby getting energetic and doing what looks like little baby press-ups. From here he may experiment with a bit of back and forwards rocking, swimming with his arms and eventually when his muscles are strong enough he will roll completely over. This may startle him at first and probably you as well, so make sure you praise him for his new little trick.

It is wise from this stage onwards to make sure your baby is not left anywhere he may be able to roll off of. Learning to roll can suddenly happen when you are least expecting it so keep one hand on him when changing his nappy if you have a high nappy changer and don’t leave him alone if he is lying on a bed or any other raised surface. A hard floor can be painful if he manages to roll onto it, so make sure he has soft carpets, sheepskins or rugs to lie on.

Crawling is a while away at the moment, but read up on baby-proofing your house to make sure you give your baby a safe environment to crawl and explore around!
