Month 23

This month your toddler’s comprehension and vocabulary leaps forwards as she begins to be able to string three-word sentences together. They will usually consist of phrases like, ‘want more milk’ or ‘no bed now’, but essentially she will be able to get a point across if it is simple. This should hopefully be less frustrating for both of you as you understand more about what she wants. Of course, it can be a double-edged sword, as she can get frustrated at not being able to express herself more. Try giving her choices if she seems unable to convey what she means; ‘are you hungry...’ (and then pause) ‘or are you thirsty?’ for example.

Read to your child

Reading to your baby at a young age helps them to hear and understand the inclinations and emotions of speech. It can also help with labelling things, so you can point to a picture and say the word, ‘fire engine’ to help them recognise what objects are called. If you are telling a story use different voices for each character and even different accents if you can manage.

Frustration in communication

This can be a problem even for children who are extremely articulate, as some of the concepts that they are trying to communicate and understand are just not within their grasp. Be patient and encouraging without trying to put words in your child's mouth. Instead, make helpful suggestions and ask questions which will hopefully help you to understand what they want.
