Hi To start with we knew nothing of how we were going to look after our first baby, So we went to the classes that were held over about 4 weeks at the hospital. We thought they would teach us the important things ie how to feed & clean our baby & change its nappy. But "NO they will show you that on the ward!" we were told. They did asked us what we already knew & even laughed at us when we got their questions wrong. They did show us all the machines they and what they did had and told us not to worry about them. I will always remember the knitting needle used to break the bag !! We still don't know what this heavy breathing bit is we see people doing on TV before they start pushing? They didn't tell us & we forgot to ask ! Anyway the delivery was fine if a bit long but later on the ward it was not until the 3rd day almost on our way out, we got someone to show us how to wash our new baby. Everything else we learnt as we went along. Why didn't they tell us the baby may start having a period & producing milk caused by the change in the hormone levels.( Now that was a shock). And the different colours of poo green, black & then yellow coming out. On visiting Tracy and new baby Emily in the maternity ward. I was upset to find Emily laying in a pool of vomit and had not been looked at for sometime. Tracy had fainted when she had tried to walk to the loo and now felt very light headed every time she sat up( we found it was a combination of a low iron level and a low blood pressure was causeing it) but it still took them 3 days to get her any iron tablets. The staff did not seam to like helping her walk to the loo & never waited to help her walk back. Oh my yes I do remmeber the giant lumps of blood clots that came out. That we should have been warned about, it totally freaked Tracy out seeing that lot down the loo And when she got out of her first bath the blood made it looked like someone had just been murdered in it.
