My two-year old son, nearly three, has only ever slept in his bed for the entire night twice. He gets up every night complaining he has had a nightmare and gets into our bed and sleeps with us until the morning. How can we stop this?

Everyone falls into a light sleep at least six times a night. When your son falls into a light sleep, he tends to be in the habit of coming to your room to continue his sleep. If he has come to you because he’s had a nightmare, the chances are it wasn’t too bad. Explain to him that he no longer sleeps in your bed and that when he wakes up and comes into your room, you will walk him back to his bed. Do this in silence and don’t interact with him. Be consistent in doing this and after three nights you should see dramatic change. He will get bored of the ‘return’ routine and when he falls into his light sleep, he will eventually roll over and return to sleep alone.

I am trying to potty train my youngest daughter who is two but my rather helpful four-year old is curious about the whole process, often tries to help and I am worried about the hygiene risks to her. Should I limit training solely to the toilet, rather than other areas of the house, to contain germs?

Let her and your older daughter know that visiting the loo is a private activity and you don’t need people coming with you. This is mostly aimed at your eldest daughter. If your eldest daughter is insistent on helping her younger sister she could pour the contents of the potty down the loo when all is finished. Your youngest could flush and they could wash their hands together at the basin. Of course, there are times when children refuse to wash their hands, and so I suggest that you keep an antibacterial hand gel by the sink. It’s also just the thing to have in your handbag when out using public loos!
