Six things you should know about vitamin D

Six things you should know about vitamin D

Do you know why you and your child need the 'sunshine vitamin' and how you can get it?

Sunshine

The days are getting shorter – and with the fading light goes our child's endless summer days playing in the park, and their supply of vitamin D. So why do they actually need it, and how can they get it?

  1. Children need vitamin D for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth – without it, they can develop rickets or bow legs.
  2. Half of mums think vitamin D can be found in foods, like orange juice, when you can actually only get it from sunshine or hold onto it longer by taking supplements.
  3. Under-5s, breastfeeding mums and pregnant women especially need lots of vitamin D to stay healthy.
  4. In the UK we only really make vitamin D between April and September – outside of these months we need a boost to help us hold onto it.
  5. Vitamin D can help support a healthy immune system which, during winter, and especially flu season, could help keep us and our little ones healthy and the sniffles at bay.
  6. The government recommends all babies and young children between six months to five years should take a vitamin D supplement.

A survey by Colief found over a third of mums don't know the importance of vitamin D for their children – but now you do!
