Ten tips for toddler online safety

Ten tips for toddler online safety

Our toddlers are probably more comfortable playing online games than any others now. With this in mind, we put together some online safety tips for your little one

1. If you're brave enough to hand your tablet to a child, protect it. There are lots of cute padded cases.

2. Ensure all downloads and in-app purchases require a PIN.

3. Update your parental controls. On the iPad you can restrict access to some apps and age-rated content; Androids have less built-in options but there are third party apps.

4. With an Android or Windows tablet, you can create a user account for your child with parental settings. Windows even reports on what your child has been doing.

5. iPads and iPhones don't have user accounts, but you can lock your child into one app with Guided Access.

6. If your tablet runs the Google Android system, download a 'sandbox' app such as Famigo, which lets you choose the apps, games and videos your child can access.

7. Many video-streaming apps let you control content with a PIN code and YouTube has search filtering; but the safest way for kids to watch video is with a service such as Hopster.

8. Turn on your home broadband's parental controls so no internet nasties get into your home. Contact your broadband provider for details.

9. Share the experience. Don't turn the tablet into a babysitter – take time to share, guide and talk about the tablet experience with your kids.

10. Set clear rules early – such as not using tablets or phones at the table – and lead by example.
