The benefits of dance

Dance teacher and Disco Duck founder Amanda Hughes tells you about the benefits of getting babies and little ones busting some moves

Dance is a very popular choice of activity for both the old and the young and it is not surprising. Here are some well-known facts about dance:

• It reduces stress
• It increases energy and serotonin
• It improves flexibility, strength, balance and endurance
• It strengthens bones and boosts cardiovascular health
• It increases mental capacity

Parents and carers are very keen for their children to be involved in dance at an increasingly young age as they have noticed the enjoyment they show at home moving to their favourite tunes. With the preschool market, creating a session that is not only educational, fun, engaging and active can be a real challenge!

We pride ourselves on having found a successful formula through years and research and experience:

MUSIC

Catchy upbeat tunes with rhythmical beats and entertaining words and lyrics will inspire imagination and encourage children to follow the actions.

PROPS

An important part of the structure is finding items that will engage children with a healthy approach, such as hula hoops, parachutes, bean bags, items for balancing, scarves or ribbons.

STORIES

Children love to hear about the adventures of Disco Duck and how he loves to dance with boys and girls. Children are motivated to join in and become a part of the visualisation and captivating stories that surround our dancing adventures.

DISCO DUCKLINGS

Let's not forget our younger dancers; babies are extremely stimulated and develop very well in social and positive environments.

Amanda Hughes is the founder of Disco Duck, a pre-school dance company, and a Fellow and Examiner for the ISTD.
