Toddler won't sleep through the night?

It’s very common for children to have more sleep problems and start waking up again around this age

Waking

My 13-month-old used to sleep through the night, but since I went back to work three months ago she’s waking up again, even though I’m always home to put her to bed. Do you think it’s this change that’s disrupting her, and what should I do?

It’s very common for children to have more sleep problems and start waking up again around this age. There are various theories about why. One is that life is just too exciting now she’s probably mobile, and it’s too boring to stay asleep. Another is that, at this age, babies are laying down lots of new brain pathways related to all the motor developments taking place.

It’s likely to be one of these reasons rather than your return to work, especially as your routine changed three months ago and she’s still waking. So don’t feel guilty – though of course mothers can’t help it when it comes to situations like this. But be reassured that lots of stay-at-home mums see similar sleep disruptions in their tots.

By all means do the usual things, such as checking her room is dark enough, whether she’s warm and so on, but this might well just be an age-related phase that, hopefully, will not last too long.
