Toddler scared of the dark what should you do?
Fear of the dark is common in children, but it shouldn’t be ignored.
My son, who’s nearly three, has just become scared of the dark, wakes and wants to come in with us even though he has a night light. I don’t think that’s a good idea. Any tips?
Small children often become scared of things even if they haven’t worried about them before. Fear of the dark is common, and shouldn’t be ignored as it is genuine fearfulness. Keep his door open and a light on in the hall – this will be brighter than a night light; also reassure him there’s nothing to worry about and you are close by. Make sure bedtime is pleasant and upbeat, with a nice story, and tell him you are leaving the door open and the light on. If he’s really scared it’s probably best to let him come to you for a night or two – this wouldn’t necessarily carry on for ever.
