BBC's The One Show presenter and new author of Winging It!, Alex Jones, talks to us about life with her 13 month old son Ted and shares what she's learned about birth, motherhood and the precious moments she's experienced in her new role as a mum.

What was your (birth) experience?

My overriding feeling about Ted’s birth was that it was joyous. I used the birthing pool in labour, which I initially thought wasn’t for me. It was there so I thought I’d get in and it was so calming I kept falling asleep.

The experience was a lot different from what I’d been led to believe – I mean, I’d never heard of anyone falling asleep mid contractions, although you are beyond exhausted 12 hours in.

I look back on it fondly which I never expected to do.

How have you found this first year?

I’ve tried to embrace all that’s happened – the lovely bits, the difficult bits and everything in between. Me and my NCT girls, whose babies were born around the same time as Ted, were all saying that their first birthday is as much a celebration for you and what you’ve done, as it is for them.

Ted’s first birthday was an emotional occasion; I really looked back at how my life has changed and all that I’d achieved in a year.

You also are transported back to the nitty-gritty of birth – reliving it hour by hour. It’s early days for me I guess but it’s still all so vivid in my mind. Yes, I can remember the pain clearly.

Who’s your fantasy babysitter?

Mary Berry. She’s a mother with solid views on life and all the right values and morals – you’d feel safe leaving baby.

What’s the best parenting advice you’ve been given?

When I was pregnant, every celeb that came on The One Show from Tom Hanks to Jamie Oliver would give me a nugget of wisdom. I think the most profound bit of advice came from Anne Robinson, who I never expected to be dishing out baby advice.

She said in a no-nonsense way, ‘Congratulations. Do it well because you never know if you’ll get the chance again.’ It was her matter-of-fact way of reminding me that motherhood is a privilege and I should make the most of it. During long, sleepless nights of pacing the landing with Ted, I’d often come back to that thought. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve been given?

What's surprised you so far?

Life has become a lot more straightforward in many ways and there’s something lovely about that. It’s hard in so many ways but in others it’s a lot simpler because you’re doing the things that really matter, first.

What is your one top parenting tip that you’d pass on to new mums?

I’m no expert but the one thing we’ve got good at is laughing – it makes the whole thing a lot more palatable. Laugh off  a bad day and start again tomorrow.
