Precious moments: Coleen Rooney

The wife of footballing legend Wayne and mum to Kai, six, Klay, two and Kit, five months, tells us about living in a house full of boys

Did you always want to be a mum?
I’ve always been a maternal person, and we’ve always had kids in the family who I’ve looked after, so it wasn’t a big shock when I became pregnant with Kai.

Who’s been your biggest parenting influence?

My mum, definitely.

How quickly did you recover after each
 of your three births?

After having Kai, I probably got back into shape quite quickly, but with the other two,
it just happened when it happened – I didn’t rush anything. With Klay it took a bit longer, it was more about finding the time. But then with Kit, I had kept my exercise regime up the whole way through my pregnancy because I enjoyed it, and I’ll go back to that as soon as I feel right. But I’m going to let my body recover first – I’m not in a hurry.

What’s your favourite thing about
 being a mum?
I love the little things like playing games with the boys – Kai loves snakes and ladders. I’m very hands-on, and we do a lot of things together. I love being a mum!

How do the boys get along?
They absolutely love each other, and that’s something I’d always hoped for, as I have two brothers and we do everything together – we go on holiday, we go out – and I’ve always loved the fact that since we were babies we’ve had a bond that we still have now. I’m glad I can see that in my kids already. First thing in the morning they ask for each other. Of course, they do argue, but they really love each other.

Have they ever shocked you?
Having grown up with brothers, there’s not really much that has shocked me. I’ve learned that they’re very energetic – they constantly keep you on your feet because they’re just non-stop. Kai and Klay are proper boys, on the go from morning
to night. But they are so loving, too.

What are your boys’ favourite toys?
There’s always a ball being kicked about
in the house. It’s great for Kai as he’s made lots of new friends through football and his friends from school go, too.

What does Wayne do better than you?
Wayne’s always been a hands-on dad. He was great right from the beginning – even though there were certain things that took a bit of time to learn, it all came together. When it’s your own child, you get stuck in and help out. When we had Kai, it was all new to Wayne, but by the time Klay came along he knew how everything worked and was really confident. So it’s natural to him now with Kit.
