Jools Oliver's blog: Spooky times
From a spooky Halloween, firework displays, the early preparations for Christmas, as well as the excitement of the Little Bird photo shoot – Jools is having a very busy month!
As a child my absolute favourite time of the year was late October and early November. The changing colours of the leaves, the early morning frost on the cars, and the abundance of the pumpkins stacked up in the supermarkets!
I do remember that the most exciting night of the year was bonfire night. I have such happy memories. Mum always used to make us wear tights underneath our jeans, frankly very uncomfortable, and all the winter woollies came out and we would all walk up our street along with a hundred other families, brandishing our unlit sparklers, with butterflies in our tummies, for the impending fireworks!
But of course, nowadays it has all been slightly eclipsed by Halloween which the children absolutely loved. They had a fab, scary themed party which was such fun to do. My sister and I decorated the kitchen (nothing too gory) with cute little pumpkins, balloons and little ghost fairy lights. The children went crazy.
We did a treasure hunt in the garden, with the little ones brandishing their torches. Even Pop and Daisy were clutching my hands way too tightly. I think my sister and I may have hyped them up a little too much!
This definitely feels like the busiest term of all (I like the way I section my year off into school terms which helps me organise my life)! I know we are now heading into the Christmas section way to rapidly! I have pencilled in all the various school concerts and festive plays and factored in possible costume making by sorting out all the past costumes in to order. I categorically now have enough little Victorian street urchin costumes to rival Amazon, and a few kings bearing gifts and all!
Must hold off all this Christmas excitement for just a little while longer as we are about to shoot the glorious 'Spring Summer' collection for Little Bird in the depths of winter!
I'm really excited as I think this collection is a teeny bit different, and may I say just really cool and super retro....not surprising I know, I say that all the time, but we have put in some real extra little details to make each piece feel special - I can't wait to reveal it!
As usual, I am sure the weather won't be kind and we will be blessed with lashing rain and torrential storms when all we need is a bit of spring sunshine!
But back to the present we are all about to get in our warms and wellies, tights included, to head to our local Essex firework display. I have made the traditional (well in the Oliver household anyway) bangers in buns and jacket potatoes with baked beans - another little ritual carried on from my childhood.
So with a very busy month ahead, and one with a landmark date that sees me reach my 40th birthday...aaargh! I hope it will be a good one!
Pics hopefully to follow in my next month's blog, but excuses upfront in case they turn out very blurry, and feature myself mainly throwing some very dodgy shapes. Woohoo can't wait!!!
Lots of love Jools xxxx
