Jools Oliver's blog: Summer holiday blog
It's been a busy summer for Jools and family. From lazy days in France, surfing in Cornwall, a shoot for the Little Bird Autumn collection with the help of Pop and Daisy, and the excitement of seeing the new Little Bird Spring Summer 2014 collection.
We are nearly at the end of the summer holidays and it's been such fun! We definitely can't complain about the lack of sunshine, it was such a brilliant end to the school term and the beginning of our fun filled family adventures!
We recently returned from our holiday in France (our first beach holiday with the children for nearly 4 years!) so you can imagine how excited they were! So sweet to watch; it brought back so many strong memories of when we were little: that palpable joy the night before you go away. Suitcases by the door, little clothes laid out and rucksacks stuffed to the brim with colouring books pencils and fluffy toys - Sweet!
I wasn't looking forward to the flight at all, as I am so scared of flying, but nothing keeps your phobias in check more, than four kids, including a boisterous toddler and an over tired 4 year old to entertain while travelling!
But it's all so worth it to see the children so happy! Naked (Petal and Bud!), free and content, playing on the beach all day on holiday, nearly every day. The little ones finally got to road test our Little Bird summer range at last; I just wish I could have kept them both in it long enough before they felt the need to strip off and go as nature intended!!!!
With amazing BBQs, beautiful sunsets and quality time with the family, it was all too soon time to burst our lovely bubble and head for home.
As usual it was back home with a bump. Jamie was straight back in to work and me too; although I was really excited to go, as it was that thrilling, but sometimes rather tense, time that we get to view out latest samples for spring/summer 2014!! As we were looking at development samples it was great for us to go through them with a fine tooth comb and change bits here and there, where we feel they aren't quite right.
It was extra fun this time as I took Pop and Daisy along too! They absolutely loved coming to "work with mum", occasionally modelling the odd accessory here and there! It's so nice to be able to share my passion with them.
We have also just shot the winter campaign for this year and it was awesome to see the little models bounding around in Little Bird; it never ceases to bring a smile to my face. The colour palette for the winter season is so gorgeous, lovely rich strong colours, with a mixture of ditsy print dresses, and crisp white cuffs on a mulberry cord dress.
Beautiful! Also seeing a lush green Christmas tree being dressed in mid-August was strange, but such a treat! It was also lovely to be able to get all my kids involved. Daisy was my little stylist's assistant running around choosing tights and shoes and Pops loved entertaining the little models by piling fake snow on her head! It was a really special time.
So after a hectic few weeks, it was such a lovely treat to have a second holiday this month in our beloved Cornwall! Our yearly retreat where we always stick to the great British summer criteria: rain, fish and chips in the car, wellies on the beach, windbreaks, Cornish cream teas and more rain! As always Jamie, Pop, Daisy and I braved the freezing Cornish sea to try our hand at surfing 'midlife crisis' I hear you say?.... No, just a need to try and be cool in front of our kids!
Every morning at 7.30am (yes, I know that isn't holiday timings...I hear you!), but it really is so invigorating, rewarding and inspiring and such good fun! This being our third year at it, I hope to be able at least to perhaps turn left or right on the waves - I am not bothered which! Watching the girls ride into shore, arms in the air, is so fantastic and the highlight of our week. And seeing Jamie being tossed about in the waves, giving it a real go, is always good for a giggle!
With our wet suits laid out ready for our early rising, I am now heading to bed - this vacationing thing is exhausting!
Hoping you are all having a ball on your hols, I am desperately trying to push out of my mind the looming month of September for the Oliver family: bringing with it the chaos and emotion of the new school term.
Happy summer everyone!
Much love Jools xxx
