Jools Oliver's blog: Warm this winter
Winter has almost definitely arrived, especially in the Oliver household as the month has started off with a bit of a festive bang! And Jools shares a top tip from her mum for keeping warm on a chilly day.
We took all the children to their school fireworks on bonfire night, they were all so excited and so was Buds who usually hides his eyes and jumps into his sister's arms at the mere sight of a rocket!!!
When we were little, Halloween was always just a small fun date on the calendar, then we celebrated at school with bonfire night which was always THE big one.
Dad used to always make us jacket potatoes, sausages and beans with all the fillings you could dream of, mum perpetually insisted that we wear tights underneath our jeans, double polo necks and more scarves, hats and gloves than C&A could stock!!!!
Invariably we would walk to the fireworks looking like Michelin men, shinning our torches in the pitch black following the hub of delighted families gathering on the playing field behind our house. They really are the best family memories.
So with that I am always determined to carry on those traditions for our children, although I totally make a fuss over Halloween..... why not (in fact the Queens Jubilee, Independence Day and Thanksgiving all get a bit of an honoring in our house!), and then I slowly build up the excitement for November the 5th.
This year I surprised the kids with sparklers after tea which they loved, trying to spell out their name before the spark lost its sparkle, it was magical, and a real childhood flashback brought to life!
With mini sparklers stuck in their bangers and a special bonfire cake (peach crumble), they were all set to go, with me manning the BBQ at the school...yes that's me! I decided to give Jamie a night off, so the girls had a ball and Buds who stayed firmly in Daddy's arms looking up to the North London sky in wonderment, was priceless!
We were lucky enough to join Jamie in the filming of this year's Christmas special, going straight from November the 5th to December the 25th.
The children and I arrived home to be greeted with a giant snow globe in the garden, there were randomly placed snow dusted Christmas trees, snowmen and twinkling lights!
The kids went crazy in the snow dome having play snow ball fights with Jamie, whilst I relished the mulled wine and an amazing festive fish curry which was delish!
Feeling thoroughly in the festive spirit now, we went on our first proper winter walk as a family, this is one of our favorite weekend pastimes. The children love getting their wellies knee deep in ploughed mud and Buds and Petal picking up every stick they see lying on the ground! It really is my very favorite season of the year.
Talking of seasons the Little Bird winter collection is flying out the stores as we speak, we are all so chuffed and it's so exciting to see. It seems ridiculous but the spring collection will be in the stores just before Christmas and talking of madness the team and I are shooting our spring collection tomorrow in possibly one of the coldest days of the year so far!!!!
If you can bear to think of spring foot wear for your littlies then our classic little Mary Jane shoes are coming out in a new colour, and the return of some of our time-honoured favorites in new colours again too. We are most excited to get our amazing 70's style tracksuit out in the shops, it's a real retro piece!
Buds loves his Little Bird ski jacket which is in the shops at the moment, it fits well over his Superman suit and it's so warm! Result! He is always insisting that he doesn't need to wear a coat and that shorts and a t-shirt will do fine!
With presents waiting to be wrapped, nativity costumes to be made, my little list just keeps growing. But first things first. I am now off to watch Daisy play her last netball match of the season.
I think I may be getting an insight in to those soccer mums! Freezing my tootsies on the side line, occasionally shouting 'all sorts', whilst peeking over from my polystyrene cup of tea!
I am quietly smiling thanking mum in my head for the importance of tights under jeans! See mums always do know best!
Lots of love Jools xxxx
