The British Fertility Society has said women should be offered fertility MOTs on the NHS from the age of 25 – including counting how many eggs they have left.

There should be a national system of five-year checks for women starting from their first cervical screening, said chairman Professor Adam Balen of the University of Leeds.

The MOT could involve providing information about how to have a healthy pregnancy and testing how many eggs a woman has left.

We're starting our families later than any other country – the average age of first-time mums is 30 in the UK, compared to 25 in the US and 28 in France and Scandinavia.

Around half of all babies are now born to women over 30, and the number of babies born to mums over the age of 40 has trebled in the last 20 years.

However, the professor raised concerns about women not realising even the best IVF clinics have only a 50 per cent success rate and the fertility checks could not give full reassurance.
