Pregnancy tests just got technical

A new home pregnancy test could be capable of detecting everything from preeclampsia to twins.

Researchers at MAP Diagnostics are working on the world's first test that could analyse proteins in a pregnant mum's wee and predict the likelihood of a baby being born with chromosome abnormalities – the cause of Down's syndrome.

As a result they realised the analysis could also detect conditions like preeclampsia, ectopic pregnancy, hyperemesis gravidarum, gestational diabetes, intrauterine growth restriction and even indicate the likelihood of miscarriage or twins before the first scan.

MAP will need to widen their research before it becomes a reliable home pregnancy test, but it could be available to buy in just two years.
